Alcohol in Ice Cream Warning/Vent

So i bought a couple flavors of?Ciao?Bella Gelato from the grocery store, well one was labeled Blackberry Cabernet. ?Sounded really good so i checked the carton to see if it contained any?alcohol, there was no indication of it. ?Tonight I go to eat it & the?flavor?of wine was?definitely there, questioning it i look @ the label again to double check &?then go online. i can not find anything about?alcohol. ?i get about 1/4 of the way through & my cheeks begin to get hot (my usual 1st indicator when i usually drink) i not star 2...i?wouldn't?say?panic?but close to that. ?i find a # for their office and call i get an automated system. ?I find a # for their shop in New York, so i call there & a person answers, i ask if the Blackberry Cabernet has?alcohol?in it, he says yes 1%. ?WTF!!! i?remain?calm with him b/c i know he?didn't?do anything?wrong. ?So im a bit?irritated?right now i know i?didn't?have enough to harm my baby & DH keeps reassuring me & i heard you can have wine but it was my decision not to expose my baby to it & now i unwillingly did because it was not disclosed on the package. ?Can a company really do that? What do you?think?

Re: Alcohol in Ice Cream Warning/Vent

  • I would think they HAVE to put that on the label! I'm shocked! I would call someone and complain.

  • Thats reallllly effed up! I am sorry, like you I have chosen not to expose my child to any alcohol. I would be PISSED too! Sooo sorry!
  • i am, my mom also pointed out what is someone was a recovering alcoholic & ate it unknowing that there was alcohol in it
  • one tiny percent is not going to hurt, and i am sure that since it is such a small amount, they are not required to include it on the labeling.

why did you buy something labeled "cabernet" if you didn't want to taste wine or were worried about alcohol consumption?

  • Ummmm....it says "Cabernet" in the name.
  • That is so wrong! Besides the pregnant and recovering, what about people who have religious reasons? I would complain on behalf of all the wronged people. I would not worry though, the french drink wine during pregnancy.

I agree with this. Tiny amounts of alcohol is used for cooking all the time. I think with such a small amount it does not have to be listed. And why would a recovering alcoholic buy wine flavored ice cream? Of course this is just my opinion but I think you are over reacting.

I am curious as to what it says for ingredients?
  • Did it not say "red wine" or something to that effect anywhere in the list of ingredients?
  • do you realize that you prob have eaten things that have had 1% or less ach. in if you have eatten at a resturant.     1% is nothing, besides are you sure you are not misreading the label. Plus it did say cab. on the box
  • I vote this post ridiculous. And I believe under 4% they are not required to list it becuase it's not enough to actually intoxicate.
  • I also want to add that if a few bites of ice cream with less than 1% ach. in it, and your "cheeks start to burn" that you can not handle your ach.
  • On the website label it does list Cabernet as one of the ingredients.  Is this not the same on the carton?

  • I would complain. That's crazy. People avoid alcohol, no matter how small a percentage, for all sorts of reasons. It should be disclosed.

I would also demand lots of free ice cream in a flavour that has no alcohol:-)

  • it does list cabernet on the ingredients so that means yes it did say it had alcohol in it.
  • Dude, Cabernet is the third ingredient listed in the ingredient list.  Just Saying.

Most religious folks don't buy anything that is against their religion. If they didn't like/drink alcohol most likely they won't be buying alcohol or anything with that appearance or name of alcohol on it. My mother doesn't like coffee nor does she buy coffee flavored ice cream. Since she's LDS coffee is against her religion so there is not going to be anything in her house whatsoever that looks like coffee or tastes like coffee whether it's fake coffee flavoring or not.

    no lawsuit today, darnit.

This, I looked it up as well. It is hardly their fault if you don't know that Cabernet is alcohol.

Also I would imagine if the alcohol content is so low that you don't have to be 21 to buy it, that you do not have to list the exact % on the label.

  • lots of things have alcohol in them BTW

here is a comparison of different drinks, note that fruit juice has 0.1%

This is true. I'm LDS and avoid anything with the word coffee in it, whether it's flavoring or the real thing.

  • This post is effing rediculous.

    1. If you didn't want the flavor of alcohol, you should've chosen another gelato flavor. Or um, read the name of the flavor.

    2. 1 lousy percent is nooooothing. Is this MUD?

::sips glass of delicious white wine::

  • I bet that the 1% is the total wine content of the ice cream, not the alcohol content.

So, 14% of 1%= .14% of the icecream may be alcohol if it wasn't cooked off. That is nothing. I breathe more alcohol than that off my dh's breath when he has a beer. Calm down

  • Im sorry you are stressed about it.... but I wouldnt freak out... it was clearly labeled cabernet. I would have expected a teeny bit of alcohol.... and if it was heated at all Im sure it was cooked out. Its probably no different than eating chicken in wine sauce

and 1% is nothing... its less than halls cough drops, nyquil and some non alcoholic beers

Uh... she specifically said that she checked the package to see if it had alcohol in it, though. So that means she DOES know Cabernet is alcoholic, so she really should have known.

I think it's just a brainfart moment- no harm, no foul, just a reminder to all of us to not let the delicious, delicious ice cream come between us and our common sense.

when you check the container, then check online which both clearly state that it has Cabernet in it. And you still call their customer service which tells you less than 1% and you freak out about it. That is not a brain fart, that is just not using common sense.      Point if you do not have to be 21 to buy it then it does not have enough to harm you
