Am I the slowest mom ever? (solids)

I keep reading about kids eating Puffs and finger foods, and I'm feeling way behind. DS is eating purees (we just moved into stage 2) and he eats 2 jars per day, one at daycare and one at night. I haven't given him anything remotely chunky or pieces of anything. Even though we don't have a history of allergies or anything, I'm so freaked out about him choking or reacting to something. I have even been nervous about giving him the stage 2 jars that have multiple ingredients because I didn't want to overwhelm his system. At what point have others just "let go" and let their LO's try anything (except the obvious big no-no's - eggs, nuts, honey, milk, etc.) Am I being overly cautious? I'm thinking that if he seems happy with what he's eating, I shouldn't rush into "real" food, right? When did you introduce stuff that has been seasoned?

Sigh. It's so hard the first time around to know if you're doing the right thing or not. I just hope the instincts I'm trusting are good ones!

  • We didn't give any table food at all until 9 months and then just tiny pieces for practice until 12 months. By 13 months, he was on all table foods. go with your gut!

  • we waited until 6 months to start solids so we are in the very beginning of the purees. We are just following the pediatricians advice and trusting our gut feelings on this.

  • We've been giving DD #2 puffs, but that's about it.  And she's still on Stage one foods, twice a day.  That makes me the slowest mom ever, because with DD #1 we were beyond this when she was this age.  I totally blame myself.  #2 is just growing so fast, things take me by surprise, like "oh, maybe we should start solids!?" at well into her sixth month, and "oh my goodness, she's crawling and sitting up already?"   I'm just a moron.

  • no, you are not

DD will be 1 yr old in 3 days and we are still introducing 1 food at a time! she's recently become a nightmare eater, hardly eats anything at all. She has some finger foods but not many, most of what we give her ends up as dog food.

it's OK to take your time!

  • We didn't start puffs until 9months with Maggie.  I was scared of finger foods and choking too.
  • No need to rush.  We started solids at 6 mos and do it 1-2x per day too.  I have tried slightly chunkier foods but DS is still not ready.  All babies/moms are different- whatever works for u is ok I think.

  • we are still on stage #1 -- super purees. In fact, we had to hold off on solids this week because of baby's upset tummy... so we're back to sweet potato. I have made my own banana and it's not puree form, just super mashed...

Once her tummy settles, we'll resume more of our solid introductions... perhaps another fruit...

  • no, you're not slow...but my ped said that I could start giving him those puffs thingies and that it might help a bit with his spitting up.

also, I was worried about the choking issue as well for the puffs so before I gave him one, I ate a couple to see if they really do melt in the mouth and they do--it totally disintegrated by the time I got to the second chew.

  • Just wanted to chime in...DS will be 7 mths next week.  Right now he's just getting oatmeal one a day - and not much.  He broke out in a yucky rash after having a couple days of peas.  So we backed it up.  Did BM only for a week - now oatmeal.  Soon I'll add another veggie and try formula again.  But he only is getting solids in the evening (due to logistics).  As pps have said - no rush.
  • We're still pretty much only giving smooth stuff... bananas, apple sauce, peas, greenbeans, pears, peaches...

I figure the chunky stuff can wait until she has at least 2 teeth!
