I had mine inserted at my PP check-up (mine was 7 1/2 weeks after DD was born). I only had some mild cramping during the insertion, the most painful part was the stretching out from the speculum. I also had some mild cramping and spotting that day and the next day. Some women take ibuprofen beforehand, I didn't and didn't think I needed to.
Since I've gotten it, I've had no problems. My periods have gotten drastically lighter and shorter (my last period consisted of a morning of spotting). No other crazy side effects and DH can't feel it during sex. I'll have had it for 3 months next week and I'm glad I chose it! It is so nice not have to remember to take a pill every morning
HATED it for the first month. I felt like I was having my period the whole time, but it eventually went away and now I love it and am glad i have it. So stick it out for awhile.
Take Tylenol before your appt (my ob told me to do so) i got numbed so i felt a little pinch and it felt like i was getting a pap then after that nothing. it was done in a few min. i bleed for a few days was crampy for the rest of the first day and a little the next. only negative so far for me is tha my period came super heavy and lasted for 8 days when before baby i had it 4-5 days tops and only heavy for a day or two the most. but i don't have to worry about bc so its cool lol
it is effective immediately but i believe they tell u to wait 24 hrs after...
i am bf-ing and have not had a period either. i spotted a tiny bit with the mirena the first couple weeks. but dr. said if i continue to bf i may not get another period until i have mirena out. or i may have minimal bleeding when i wean.
honestly, I thought the insertion was pretty darn painful. I had it done around 5w pp. I spotted for nearly 5 weeks after. I think I may have had a period, but it was like a day and a half of light spotting. I'm EBF.

My OB said we were okay for sex as soon as we got home
I didn't have my first PP until after I had it inserted (but it showed up a little over a week later)
I was EBFing when I had it inserted, I just switched to formula about 2 1/2 weeks ago.
