daycare throws bm away after one hour

If DS doesn't finish his bottle, they'll keep trying to get the infant to finish the bottle for one hour. If after that they don't, they throw the food away. I was under the impression you could offer the bottle at the next feeding (which would be about three hours) without issue. Tips for helping daycare understand that? I cringe to think of how much bm they'll be wasting!!

  • Yeah...he usually takes between 2 and 4 ounces. Do I just make 2 ounce bottles? haha.

  • send smaller bottles...that is technically correct practice.

bacteria can build up in the nipple from the child's saliva.

  • cant you just send an extra nipple?

They won't handle the bottles. State regulations about handling bodily substances. :(

Looks like we'll be sending two ounce bottles!

  • Smaller bottles? I know with FF a bottle should be tossed after 1hr. I'm not sure about BM. I know what a PITA pumping is and how priceless BM is and I wouldnt want to waste a drop. Hope you find a solution!
  • Ugh I know how frustrating that can be!!! BM = LIQUID GOLD!!!! Explain to them that you would like the rest of the bottle put in the fridge if he doesnt eat all of it at once...YES they can do that despite what they tell you! I worked in an infant room at a daycare for a year and that was one of the biggest complaints! Also tell them that BM is fine for 9 hours after being defrosted and can keep for quite a while in the fridge! I hope this helps!
  • Unfortunately the daycare is right.  After an hour of the start of feeding BM and formula are no good.  Bacteria can grow in the bottle.  This is also why they won't feed your baby baby food from the jar when it comes time.  They should put into another bowl or container.  This way, if they're only going to eat half of it, they can scoop out what baby will eat and then be able to save the rest for later.
