My husband just got invited on a free business trip to stay at the Ritz in Florida this February! woohoo! I have read titles of posts about traveling but unfortunately never paid attention b/c we never though a vacation would be in the cards for us this year but this invite changes things.
If you have done air travel and vacationing with @ 10 month olds can you answer some questions:
Do we hold them on our lap on the plane or are they in carseats? (it is a 2-3 hour flight)
We will rent a car so I need to bring both carseats even if we don't use them on the plane - can I check them?
I will also want to bring a double stroller (I can't use 2 singles b/c I'll be on my own when DH is in meetings) Can that be checked?
What do I bring for them to sleep in for the hotel room?
When I start adding up luggage, car seats, stroller, pack n play (?) I am starting to feel like it might be impossible for us to manage all of this equipment and have 2 babies with us?! But I know others do it.
It is cold and gross in Philly in February - we will NEED this trip. Can you help me sort it out in my head? THANK YOU!!!
Re: 10 month old twins - air and travel questions
Ditto pp on everything.
One thing to add -- if you don't want to bring PNPs (I wouldn't, too much trouble ) you can look into purchasing Pea Pods. They are lighter and fold up a bit more for carrying -- the 201 model (NOT PINK) is the most recommended I've seen. I say not pink because that shade apparently lets more light in than the red one, and you want less light so they sleep
You could also ask the hotel if they have 2 cribs you can reserve and if they do you will need to be very sure they allow 2 cribs in one room. Some do not because it's a fire hazard. Then again, if they don't then you can get one crib and bring one Pea Pod so you have less packing. Also make sure you get a room with a fridge!
Thanks MrsLee and Robyn! All very good tips/suggestions.
My DH asked me if I thought all the effort would be worth it - I reminded him that the alternative would be to just be stuck inside our house with cold weather and twins....or make the effort and have nice weather, the beach, and twins! I like the latter :-)
Thanks agaian for the help!
Before the girls turned two, we always bought three seats - one for each of us and one to interchange the girls in. That way somebody could have free hands if they needed them. It worked out well for us.
Yes, you can check carseats and the double stroller.
Call the hotel and see if they provide either cribs or PNPs. Most hotels do, sometimes for a small fee, sometimes for free. If they don't you can use a rental service. We've used babysaway.com before in Florida. They'll deliver it the hotel and pick it up. Very easy.
As for getting all your crap through the airport, I highly recommend getting backpack travel cases for your convertable carseats - that give you more hands free. Also, instead of bring multiple suitcases, bring one big one - that way one person can push the stroller and the other person can deal with the luggage. Oh, and just buy diapers when you get down to Florida because they take up so much space in the luggage.
Good luck with your trip. You'll have fun!
Well I definitely agree with previous poster about buying diapers in Florida, we always do this now. Just bring enough to last two days and then buy a box. Also we stayed in a Ritz Carlton this summer in Vegas, and they gave us a full crib (not a portable one) with sheets, crib bumper and blankets. I would call the Ritz and ask them what they have, it will save you lots to lug around the airport!
Good luck, and it will be worth it!
We've flown with the twins at least 10 times since they were 4 weeks old. We ask for the aisle seats in the same row so we dont have to buy a 3rd ticket. This way, we're next to each other but just the aisle between us & some space!
We checked the car seats and they'll check your double stroller at the plane door so you can push them to the gate. Note: Get the car seat covers to protect them cause they WILL mess em up if you dont.
We were given cribs (and bedding) at the hotels but give em a heads up before you get there to reserve them cause you need 2. Buy diapers there and just bring enough for a day or 2. My tip is travel as light as you possibly can cause it's alot of work traveling with 2 babies.
