Is anyone else going through this? My LO was 8lbs, 14oz at birth. At one week appt, but 8lbs 2oz and doc told me she should be back at birthweight by 2 week appt (which I laughed b/c all she does is eat--not sure how she lost weight in the first place even though I know it's normal!). At 2 week appt yesterday, she was only 8lbs 3oz. I have been trying to EBF, but have started supplementing a little formula through a feeding tube at the breast (about 20-30cc's per feeding). Just curious is anyone else is going through this? My boobs seem to have plenty of milk, but I'm feeling discouraged that my LO isn't getting enough from that alone. I'm thinking about letting LO just have one breast per feeding so I'm sure she's getting hind-milk. Maybe I should've posted on Breastfeeding.
Thanks ladies!
Re: My LO hasn't gained back birthweight! :(
DS didn't have that problem but I wanted to say that both of mine only ate on one size per feeding. They were too full to move to the other side after 10 minutes.
I had to use the SNS tube to get DD to start breast feeding (it took a few days for my milk to come in and she was in the NICU and we had to show that she was actually eating before she could leave, so the LC gave us the tube to make sure she was eating). She didn't seem to gain much weight nearly as well when we were using the SNS. It was great to get her to learn to BF but once we stopped using it and giving her pumped milk or formula to make sure she was getting enough, she started gaining plenty of weight. At three weeks she had had a growth spurt and was 2 and 1/2 lbs over her birth weight.
I'd suggest making sure LO is nursing for a decent amount of time on each breast. I know when DD first started nursing she'd only nurse on each breast for about 4-5 minutes and then she'd pull off and take a break. I thought she needed to switch because I was out or something but she just wanted a breather. I'd let her go for 15-20 minutes on a side before switching.
I hope that helps. I know I am no LC and I still supplement with formula but I know how frustrating it can be sometimes and I know that the SNS tube can be a pain in the butt! (DD tried using it as a straw several times) Try talking to an LC and LO's pedi to see what they suggest. If all else fails, its not like you're going to be a bad person if you give your LO formula...they make it for a reason.
dd had jaundice in hospital- so we had to supplement with formula after 3 days in hospital and she went under the lights
dd was born 8lbs 7oz
next day she was 7lbs 4 (or 2 oz)!
discharge weight 8lbs 2oz (supplemented with formula and had phototherapy lights)
1st week well visit- 7 12oz (no supplementation- milk had come in)
2nd week- weight check at ped- 8lbs 1oz (supplemented bc docs were concerned)
3rd week- 8lbs 6oz (still supplementing)
so by 3rd week, she technically wasnt back to her birth weight, but doc said that was close enough- so then i didnt have to go back for another month
she was just weighed at her 2mo appt and she is 9lbs 14oz - she is fully formula fed- my milk supply was very low and it decreasing
