1st Trimester

Toxo Plasma

My doctor just called and said that I tested positive for Toxo Plasma.  This is very odd because I havent been around a cat in well over a year, rarely eat meat, and wash my fruit and veggies really well.

My doctor also agreed that it was odd, and said that this test is known to produce false negatives.  She made an appointment for me to meet with a genetic counselor on Tuesday to help decide if further testing is needed.

Just wondering if anyone else has tested positive....and what action they have taken.

Thanks

Re: Toxo Plasma

  • I'm sorry to hear that.  I have no information on this particular topic.  Just wanted to wish you luck.  ::waits in post for an educated answer::

  • Sorry I dont have any experience with it either. We have a cat and DH cleans out the litter box....except for this week since he is out of town. He makes me wear gloves and a surgical mask (I can easily get them from work) when I clean out the box so I dont get toxoplasmosis. ::::waits with synchrosally::::

  • toxoplasmosis is actually found in a lot of places..even in dirt! but it can come from any kind of animal dropping..so you don't necessarily have to have a kitty to get it :) I had a patient that actually got it from bat droppings b/c she was a cave diver! she caught it out of the air she was breathing. i'm sure that's not the case with you though!

hopefully it's just a false positive, like the doc said and all will be well! I thnk there was another girl on the board who had it-she was a vet tech.

     GL and keep us posted!

  • Yeah I was reading that...which makes it even more odd.  Since we only own a gold fish and I dont do my own gardening and/or landscaping.
  • My OB told me I had Toxplasmosis over the summer when she did  pre-natal lab  work. I had the test repeated by my primary and then went to see and Infectious Disease Specialist. They repeated the test 2X and it was negative both times. The ID Specialist said it must have been bad lab work which triggered the initial indeterminant rating.

I would recommend going right to the ID Specialist to be treated/diagnosed. My OB and primary seemed to know very little about it. My OB told me that I tested positive for it, which was not exactly true (my results were indeterminant and not positive) The ID Specialist said that if he read the initial results (which showed indeterminant and not positive) he would have repeated the test just to be safe, but would not have told me that I actually had it.  This would have saved me a lot of worrying.

Your doctor will need to find out what your IGG and IGM rating are for toxoplasmosis, to tell you have long you have had it and if you now have an immunity to it. You should go on the mayoclinic website, which has helpful and accurate info. I know a lot about it now from this whole experience, so let me know if you have any other questions. Hopefully you do not have it either :-)

  • one more thing...toxo is not genetic, it is an infection (parasite). I would talk to you dr. about why they want you to go to a genetic counselor...seems like the wrong type of doctor to me.
  • Thanks for sharing.  I am not sure why they are sending me to genetic testing.  I just called my doctor and left a message asking her why?!?
