3rd Trimester

How long are you staying in the hospital?

Everyone on here who has had a LO already seems to be talking multiple days, and I was just curious.  Up here (Canada) you get 24 hours and you are sent home.

Re: How long are you staying in the hospital?

  • Our hospital and insurance company agree on 48 hours after birth.

  • I have 48 hours, unless there are complications.

  • With both DD, we stayed a little longer than 24 hours because I felt great and both babies were doing very well.
  • At our hospital it's 2- 2 1/2 days. They need to do a 48-hour check of LO and then if things are good, you can go.

  • 2 days with a vag, and 4-5 with  a C.

That is what is coverd. Certainly, it is up to the patient and Dr. as well. I was in the hosptial for a total of 6 days with DS, and he was a vag. I had been sick prior to delivery, and needed time for both of us to recover.

  • I have 48 per the insurance & hospital, but I want out after 24. If everything goes fine then to me there is no reason to stay.
  • I have 2-3 days for vag and 3-4 for c/s

I guess that makes a difference too.  I keep forgetting that America doesn't have free health care.  I think Obama needs to put that on his "After winning the nobel prize" to do list.  Big Smile

  • Two nights after  vaginal birth.  So if LO comes at 1am, they will give me two more nights.  If LO comes at 11:59pm, that counts as the first night.

For c/s, you get 3-4 nights, same way depending on what time c/s takes place.

  • At the birthing center we have to stay a minimum of 4hrs, avg stay is 6hrs, but it all depends on your vitals, the baby, mom has to pee, shower, eat a nutritious meal, be able to stand and walk on her own etc...You can stay as long as you wish.

If we deliver in the hospital, 24-36hrs for vaginal.

  • We're allowed 48 hours after birth. If all looks good, I can go home earlier if I want to, but I'll play that by ear.

edit: we stay 4 days after a C-section.

I think that depends on your dr. and if it is your first baby. I also think that depends on what type of room you are in. If it is a free one, then they will need the bed for another woman. I was in the hospital for 1.5 days and my dr. told me I could stay the rest of the day if I needed it. I was also in a semi-private room that I paid for. This time I am going for a private room. My SIL was on baby 4 and she got send home like 4-5 hours later. I would love to only stay for 24 hours this time.

  • Our insurance allows 48 hours after a vaginal birth and 72 after a c-section.  I stayed 2 nights with DD, but was really itching to leave after DS (I felt great and just couldn't get decent sleep while there) and was sent home after 24 hours.
    DD1 - 12.25.05
    (m/c 1.17.07, m/c 5.15.07)
    DS - 03.15.08
    DD2 - 12.03.09
    DD3 - 3.28.11
  • We can go home after 24 hours or stay 48 hours (longer if C-section). We're planning on staying 48 hours to take advantage of all the help with LO (and help learning to breastfeed).

  • It really depends on how you're doing after birth, how the baby is doing, and if there were complications.  With DS there were no complications so they said I could go home if I wanted after 24 hours but also said if I wasn't ready I could stay.  I went home.
  • 24-48 hours.  The less the better, IMO

  • Since I am having a c-section on Wed I can stay until Saturday but right now the doc said we can go home Friday as long as everything is good.
  • 48 hours fof vaginal birth without complications and 72 hours for c/s without complications
  • 2 days for vaginal, 3 days for c/s.  I would much rather leave 12-24 hours after birth, my OB won't sign release papers until the 2-3 day mark (I MIGHT be able to talk him into cutting id short by a day when we actually reach delivery).
  • Two nights after LO is born. The first night would start at 12:01am.

I live in Grande Prairie and I haven't been told that I only have 24 hours.  Everyone I know who has delivered here has stayed two nights after the baby was born (other than a friend of mine who on her 3rd kid, only stayed one night after but she and baby were completely ready to go home).

Especially with boys, if you are circumsizing them, they will not let you go home within 24 hours as they will only do the procedure on the 2nd day.

  • My hospital discharges 24 hours after delivery with vag.  I'm surprised at how many have 2 days!
