Scary night last night

C had a rough day at daycare - teacher said he was out of sorts.  I took his temp at home and it was fine.  Then during dinner I noticed he was having trouble breathing (they call it grunting - but it doesn't sound like a grunt).

Of course DH is out of town so I sent J over to the neighbor's and took C right to the ER.  At the ER they took his temp and it was 101.8 and fast heartrate and rapid breathing.  He had also developed a really slight rash.  They gave him Tylenol and took chest x-rays.

They determined that he has pneumonia (sp?) and noticed also that his trachea looked like it was pushed over.  That prompted another set of x-rays (and then another).

Long story short, he definitely has pneumonia and was also tested for H1N1.  He's being treated for both.  The radiologist said (and provided the resident with research) that 50% of little kids have a "crooked trachea" that corrects itself over time, so no worries there.  Whew!  I was thinking the worst!

We got  home around 1am from this little adventure and J came home from his unintentional first sleepover at 7:30 this morning.  We're wiped, but I feel blessed that nothing is more seriously wrong.

Upcoming challenges:  finding liquid Tamiflu (apparently no one in the city has it so I have to go to a compounding pharmacy) and convincing J that it's okay to miss his preschool's picture day today.  =(

  • Boo - I'm glad that figured out what is going on. You said they're treating him for both but did they confirm that it was H1N1 or will they especially since you're having a hard time finding the tamiflu?

  • Poor little guy!  Hopefully you guys can rest up today and J can deal with missing the pics.  I can imagine it's hard for him to understand the need.

I think they're just being cautious.  He was swabbed for H1N1 (woken up for that - you can imagine how fun that was!) but I think it takes some time for the results.  They said the tamiflu is only effective if given in the first couple of days so they wanted him to have it now just in case.  They gave him a dose at the hospital last night (they have a compounding pharmacy onsite).

  • What a scary night!

And I'd call them today just to double check on the H1N1 thing. I wouldn't treat it if he doesn't have it.  Tamiflu can have some harsh side effect...especially on a little body.  Porr guy.
