Is it the spelling or the sound? Friends and family don't love Rilo

I may be opening myself to a flood of NMS comments here.  If you're tempted to post one, I'm going to lay myself bare and ask you to tell me what you don't like about it.  We don't want to doom this kid, after all.

For the record, his middle name will be Lukas and his older sister's name is Kyan (like Ryan) Amelia.  We go with unusual first names and safer middle names, just to give the kids a choice.  My parents did the same for me, and I've always appreciated it, though I stuck with the unusual one.

We first heard Rilo in an NPR story about the band Rilo Kiley.  We like how the two names sound together, and thought that Rilo and Kyan would be a nice combo.

Now for the fun leeetle poll:

Re: Is it the spelling or the sound? Friends and family don't love Rilo

  • I don't like the sound of the word.  Plus, it is far to close to Rolo.

    I would keep looking.

  • I voted to spell it Rylo. The name is NMS, but I don't really know why. If you like the name, go for it. But would it be pronounced Ryeloe or Reeloe? If it's Ryeloe, you should spell it Rylo, but if it's Reeloe you should spell it Rilo. Because I thought Reeloe when I first saw it.

  • I think Rilo would end up getting called Ryan alot, especially if you introduce him with his sister Kyan.  People will probably remember it as Ryan.
  • I'd like the option of, it sounds ridiculous and completely made up and please do not name your child that.

  • Yikes! I think it looks and sounds made up. Maybe a name for a dog, but not a child.
  • It sounds like a mix of Riley and Milo, and sounds totally made up. So, sorry nms at all.

  • You asked to explain why someone wouldn't like it and here's my meaning:  It simply sounds and looks ridiculous.  It doesn't look unique or creative or meaningful.  Just ridiculous.  It also looks like a misspelling/reinterpretation of either Milo or Riley, like someone was trying to merge the two names.  I don't think alternate spelling improve it at all.  It simply looks like trying too hard.

  • i didn't vote because i like it just fine. i like milo too, though.

Yup.  I don't like made-up names.  I like the band though.

    Thanks!

How funny that I forgot to give people an "I like it fine" option.  Smile

  • My opinion- thwe more off the cuff you go, the less people are goin to like it. I realize maybe you had a different experience w your dd's name- but I think what you are dealing w now is normal. If you go for different, you have to do it knowing people may not be behind it.

  • It sounds funny.  It is spelled funny.  It is too strange for me.
  • My first thought was that you were probably a Rilo Kiley fan.  That said, I don't like it as a name... someone said it looked like a cross between Riley and Milo, and I agree. And it does sound "made up."  I do like Milo though, so that's my choice.

    this

  • Where is the option for it is horrible?

    Put my vote there.

  • Love your poll choices - thanks for having a sense of humor. Hate Rilo. It sounds as if you two couldn't decide between Riley and Milo and said "Hell, let's just name it Rilo."

IMO, It sounds like the name of a product, not a person.

  • I don't like it because of the sound, the look, and the fact that it doesn't seem to actually be a name. Sorry.
  • Okay I usually am not so stright foward on here because I hate when someone is so excited about a name and then people write mean things about it BUT you asked so to be honest I think it sounds like a dogs name.... sorry.

Ditto. And I agree with pp that when Rilo and Kyan are introduced together people will remember that you have 1 kid name Ryan.

    I agree.

  • I don't think it's the worst name, but I do wonder why not Milo?  FWIW I think Milo Lukas sounds very nice.

  • It immediately brought to mind Rilo Kiley.  I think a lot of people assume that it is a singer's name, but it's the band's name...not one person.  And the lead singer is a girl and most people I know have assumed that Rilo Kiley was her name.  So, I don't hate it, but I think it'll make a lot of people think of a girl with a really feminine voice.
  • Well, I happen to love it, since we are naming our daughter Rilo.! But I don't like names like Katherine and Emily and Grace, Faith, Hope and Joy like most people on these boards so take my opinion for what it's worth.

We've told our family members and they all love it, even the more traditional ones.  I grew up with a name that was "different" and I didn't die a horrible death as people make it seem on here.  But that's why I've never asked anyone's opinion on here, because frankly, I don't really care about their opinions.  I say go for it if you like it!

Thank you for this comment.  Exactly what I needed.  It turns out (all attempts at humor aside) that my skin just wasn't thick enough for these comments.  I am frustrated that we're getting odd responses from family, but my partner, daughter and I all love it.

Anyhow, thanks again for your comment.  It made my day.

(I also sent the same as a PM so you'd see it.  Sorry for the duplication.)

  • I really don't mind the name... as long as you like the band enough to admit you named your kid after it.  Lol.  But seriously.  The only thing I don't like is that Rilo Lukas feels like it has too many "L"s in it when you're trying to say it.  I try to avoid ending a first name on the same sound that the middle name starts with.  ie. Erica Anne. Michael Leonard, etc.
