Thumb sucking

I have tried everything to keep DD from being a thumb-sucker. Up until now she has just been sucking on her fist, but the other day I found her asleep in the Pack n Play at my moms with her thumb in her mouth. So usually when I see her put her hand up to her mouth I pull it out and stick the paci in.

Yesterday I found her again with her thumb in her mouth and did the same thing...pulled the thumb out and stuck her paci in. And she actually put her hand up to her mouth, popped the paci out and sent it flying, smiled at me, and stuck her thumb right back in! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

Re: Thumb sucking

  • Please dont stop your DD from sucking her thumb at such a young age!! It is a form of self-soothing.

  • Please let her suck her thumb. It is self soothing. Yes, it will be harder to break that habit later on, but that is something you will have to deal with as being a mom. Take it as a blessing that she can soothe herself.
  • DD sucks her thumb has been she was 2 months old...there really is no way to stop them right now - I don't think it's an issue - my husband was a thumb sucker and he is fine (and didn't need braces or anything) I think it becomes a problem when they are like 2 or 3 STILL sucking their thumb...not when they are 2 - 3 months...just my opinion - I'm letting DD suck her thumb she only does it when she is tired and then it falls out when she is asleep anyway..I would leave it alone (I am)

  • Dd is a thumb sucker, as was dh.My family was a bit worried because my sister, just now at 20 yo stopped sucking her thumb!

I think at this age, it's cute and would never try to stop dd!

We will worry about it at 2 or 3 if shes still doing it.

  • AT that age, they are what they are.  DD was great on the paci and not a thumbsucker.  DS is clearly going to be a thumbsucker.  Just let it happen.  Sure tougher later on but what are you going to do -- continue to make her unhappy about it?  Just let it go.  The more you fight it, likely the worse it will be.  Even later.  Just ask my sister who continued to suck her thumb through HS out of sheer stubborness because my dad kept trying to make her stop.

  • Yeah I think I may have taken too much unsolicited "advice" from other people on this one instead of reading up on it like I do everything else. Most people just tell you how to stop it! I didn't really think of it as self-soothing I guess since it doesn't really seem to help when she does it, but I guess if you think it won't hurt anything I don't mind it. And I hate to admit that I think it's cute, I just don't want her to have a problem when she's older.

    Thanks for the advice girls!
