I can have either by this weekend. Cost is no factor. I have been working with the Nikon d40 for the last year. Canon Rebel would be brand new. Which do I want?
I have been a HUGE fan of Nikon since my first photography class in high school... I have a simple Cannon Digital camera right now which is suffice, but I'm trying to talk DH into buying a Nikon D40 to take awesome shots of LO.

We have a Rebel and ADORE it! My mil is a professional photographer and has a Nikon, while she likes it, she misses her old Canon like mad. She says it's just easier to use and you can do more with it.
To Be honest with you, you can not go wrong either way. Both are amazing cameras. I've worked with both and have sold both. A huge plus with the Nikon D40 is it has a setting for the fastest shutter response in that catagorey. Meaning no wait time to snap the perfect moment.
Being a photographer - I only shoot Canon for digital, but I like Nikon for 35 mm. However - if you already have flashes & lenses for a Nikon, you should stick with that brand as you will have much more versatility with it.
But - if money is really no object - you should buy a Canon 40D - a rebel is really a consumer model - the Canon 40d is amazing!
I'm a photographer and a huge Canon advocate, but if you already know the Nikon system and are happy with it, I would stick with that.
That being said, I have 3 Canon pro-grade cameras and a Rebel XSi for myself for fun shooting and I absolultely LOVE the Rebel. I actually use it for some of my pro jobs (shhhhhhh, its just so much lighter and simpler).
Canon makes amazing products. I have abused mine beyond anything that should continue working and they have never quit on me. I have the original Rebel which has been smashed into mountains in Africa, Canada and America, dropped in the ocean breifly, gotten sand and dirt and mass amounts of pet hair in it, and probably taken over 20,000 rolls of film in its life and its still works! I will be a Canon girl to death if their quality always stays the same!

I haven't used the Nikon D40 so I can't really speak to that. But I talked with a lot of people, and a couple of photographers before buying a camera earlier this year and everyone said the Canon Rebel. We are pretty amateur with a camera, but the Canon takes amazing pictures!
I agree that you can't go wrong either way. I have a D40 and love it. I like the light weight and relatively small size of the Nikon (because I'm a weakling with small hands ) but I don't know how the Canon compares. Could you try out the Canon ahead of time to see if you like the way it feels in your hand and whether you like the controls, etc.?
Hey missy Since I was lurking, I thought I'd jump in on this one. This question is totally like "Mac or PC?"--each camp is totally sold that theirs is the best.
If you haven't used a Canon before, go to a store and hold the Canon. See if the buttoning sequence makes sense to you. For me, the Canon button sequences made more sense than the Nikon, but I also grew up using a Canon. I'd recommend whichever just feels more natural to you.
Also, you probably already know this, but unless you're shooting professionally with the camera, I personally don't find that you need more than 10-12 megapixels. Most people can't seem to tell the difference with the naked eye once you hit about 12. And you can blow up to poster size with 10 megapixels no problem. I personally find that Canon's cameras are more economical in that range. I know you said money is no object, but I'm assuming that you still want to pay the least amount that you have to!
