Parenting after a Loss

JFF: Stupid things your MIL has said

My MIL told me while PG not to eat watermelon or acidic foods because the baby would be fussy when he was born........ WTF?!

A friend of ours who is due soon isn't sure about breastfeeding and was told by her MIL that the baby couldn't have infant motrin if BF. I think she meant the mom but she insisted the baby couldn't have it, or tylenol. All I could say was wow.....

So I want to hear the stupid things your MIL, or your mom have said about parenting/PG. I'm curious!

Re: JFF: Stupid things your MIL has said

  • Oooh this could be fun.

Gmil told me not to raise my hands above my head when I was pg because it would cause a m/c.

My mom told me my kids could never compare to how advanced her kids (me & my sister) were. I couldn't believe even about that she's competitive with me.

MIL told me not to eat tuna even though she was at the dr's appt when he said I could. She also told me that 1 glass of wine here & there would give M fetal alcohol poisoning.

She says that M should be ff in her car seat already. Um yeah hi... it's against the law.

MIL has said that if I didn't get M to take a bottle & get her able to be soothed by someone else she was gonna end up crazy. I told her that it was the closeness that soothed M, not the milk.

MIL has said on more than one occasion the being jewish is a nationality and not a religion. And gmil can't understand how I'm italian & irish, but jewish at the same time. And these are the people that want to watch my child.

  • And mommy can have motrin if she's bfing. In fact there are very few things she can't actually have. Most of the supposed no no's are more because the dr's have no clue so they err on the side of caution.

Wait wait wait........ WTF?! I can't even see how they may perceive logic in that. and I've been able to explain serial killers' mindsets to DH. I'm just flabbergasted. That seems so so stupid. I'm sorry if I'm being redundant but I can't grasp it! As for the other comments, yeah I agree on the competitive thing and I love the OWT everyone swears are true all the time, even when proven wrong! I raised my hands above my head more while PG with DS than I did while PG with our losses!

Oh believe me i know that, I heart my Motrin! But you know how people say you can't have this or that or the other thing because you're BFing or PG even if it's not true. That's why I think she meant mom, not baby. but regardless, still a dumb comment

  • This is great - I'm sure I have quite a few, but I'm just waking up!!! YAY for a day off....I'll add to this later, but wanted to thank you both for the great morning laugh....of maybe I should thank your MIL's and mom'sBig Smile

  • When we called MIL when I was in labor (already 6 cm when I got to the hospital), she told me to cross my legs and wait for her to get there.  She had a 7 hour drive to get to NC.  This was despite the fact that we repeatedly told her she would NOT be in the delivery room when the baby was born.  Thank goodness he was born 4 hours before she got there or else I would have had to pad lock the hospital room to keep her out.

  • yep. They swear it's a nationality. I can't even begin to tell you the battles I have had over it because I don't want them teaching that to M.

ETA: The last I heard there was no place called JEW LAND either. They're nuts. That was one of our battles. I asked them to prove to me that Jewish was a nationality. I asked "where do jews come from". GMIL said Israel. MIL said from Israel & Egypt. So I calmly asked.... "Wouldn't they then be Israeli & Egyptian?"

To which I got the look of death & they each walked away & didn't speak to me for a week.

    LMAO

  • When I was pregnant with DS, she told me I was having a girl because I was getting "wider" and "thick in the face" She is coming for a visit today, can't wait to see what she thinks I'm having this time.
  • My MIL is Queen of the Old Wives Tales.  If I didn't watch her like a hawk, or lock the liquor cabinet when she babysits, I know that she would be giving my kids honey, rubbing whisky on their gums for teething, and treating them to yummy sugar water bottles.

When my nephew was fussy one time and she advised some gem about passing him around a table leg three times during a full moon or something.

She constantly thinks we are overheating our kids and as soon as our backs are turned she takes off their pants.  Funny, isn't that the opposite of what most old people think--that kids need to be bundled up?

She taught my other nephew how to crawl out of his crib.  I seriously would have killed her if she did that with my kids.

    She's a gem.

  • When we told MIL about the 1st pg, we thought she would be so excited sharing the news with her on Mothers Day. All she said was " Oh, was this planned?" and then said " Well it will be interesting to see you finally gain some weight". What a beeotch!
  • MIL has said some wacky things, such as:

"put a little whiskey on her paci and she'll fall asleep" (super old school)

'I don' believe in medicating children, you should not give her tylenol even though her leg is red, raised and swollen from her shots."

omg lmfao!!  i'm sorry but that is too funny!  I'm SO sorry.  but don't u know?  Jewish people come from Jewania.  U know over there in Europe somewhere.  duh!  lol!  seriously, i'm SO sorry u have to deal w/ such idiots on such a regular basis.

  • Oh, Oh, I forgot one!  Here's another from my MIL:

SIL and I were talking about our kids' middle of the night, ER-visit-worthy croup attacks.  Both my DD and my nephew have had them, and in case you have never experienced this, it is terrifying as a parent--you feel totally helpless, and usually think that your DC is going to die.  We were in the middle of comforting each other (nephew had just had an attack the night before) when MIL overheard us and butted in, telling the story that she loves to tell about my DH throwing a tantrum as a child and holding his breath until he passed out.  SIL and I just looked at her like, "YEAH.  That is so JUST like your kid coughing so hard that he/she can't breathe in the middle of the night, crazy lady."

And I don't believe that story about my DH anyway.

  • When DD was born, the MIL came for a visit and went on and on about how glad she was that the baby has light skin and blue eyes. It was definitely a WTF kind of moment. I'm half Korean and H is half Italian. I guess that means that she is glad DD doesn't look more Korean?

That's just good old family racism for you. No

I was in grad school with a girl who said her nationality was Jewish.  When I asked more questions, she said she grew up in NC, but her ancestors were Jewish.

So..... what were Jews before Israel... your ILs are a bit nutty. ;-)

  • Wow..you ladies have some effed-up MIL's...I suppose I should count myself lucky that the worst I have to deal with is her repeated calling the girls "my babies" and always trying to one up things I say (i.e. I told her the other day I was missing the girls so much being away from them all day at work and only getting an hour with them at night - her response was "now you know how I feel"...really??!!)
  • Ok - I'll play now that I'm awake:

When I was PG with Colin, one of DH's cousins was a few months ahead of us (she actually delivered on my first EDD) and MIL said to me repeatedly that this cousin didn't look as pg as me, but "that she was thin before she got pg"....my reponse well since I was a huge fatty prior to getting pg, I guess that definitely makes a difference. This comment was even more of a gem because MIL is twice my size, even when I'm at my heaviest.

  • When I was pregnant, MIL and I were in Walmart, I wasreaching for something on a top shelf, and MIL had a fit and said I would get the embilical cord wrapped around his neck if I reach over my head for something....
  • My DW and I both plan to carry/birth a child each and then we might consider adopting our third. So, MIL says the other night:

"Well I know you'll both be loved by both children but it you'll obviuosly have more love for the child you each carry since they are biologically yours". WTF??? Who says that????

Before we confirmed that Layne was a girl she consistently called the baby "My boy" even though she knew we really wanted a girl first and even though I kept telling her I knew it was a girl. It was pure joy when I got to call her and say "It's a GIRL!". Now she continues to insist that DW will have a boy! Ov yey!!

    Confused

    Oy Vey is right!

  • When I was 5 weeks PG (they knew b/c it was IVF), we had a wedding to go to, and the building had a handicapped ramp in it. So as I started to walk down the ramp, MIL freaks out and screams, "are you allowed to walk down ramps? is that safe?" I wanted to strangle her. I hope some random bystanders had pity on me. ;)

I just have too many good ones!!

  • hi,
this is my first time posting here, but I had to respond to this one..............I will limit myself to one stupid thing she has said!

When I was pregnant with my dd I mentioned that I was planning on trying to breast feed.....her response  "that's awefully selfish of you, other people will want to feed and bond with the baby too."

    She's an idiot!

  • Wow! Some of these things....geesh!

I really do love my MIL. She's a great lady. But I do find it somewhat annoying that she thinks I'm having twins because I'm "so huge". Look at my siggy pic and tell me what you think...LOL.
