They plowed a rocket ship the size of an SUV into the moon so that they could collect and analyze the debris from it. Apparently they are looking for ice in the debris, which means water, and sign of life.
When I heard this, all I could think about was that scene in Time Traveler where when he goes into the future and witnesses the moon breaking apart because of our bombing and boring into it, and the chunck of moon was going to hit earth.
If the moon, orbit and mass, were screwed up by us, wouldn't that affect the tides and weather? I don't think it would be that drastic, but you never know.
I watched it on the Today Show as well, and the part that cracked me up most was this: The guy was reassuring everyone that it's no big deal to send these things into the moon because meteors and such hit it every day and the moon is doing just fine. Yet they were expecting to see some big explosion, when we definitely don't see one every day when supposedly things are hitting the moon!

It makes me nervous too.
