Freezing milk...the bags are taking over my freezer!

So I have about 200 oz in my freezer and these things have packed my entire door. I feel like I could fit a lot more if they would compress into a smaller space. I have the lansinoh 6 oz bags.

What is the best way to shrink the amount of space they take up?

Re: Freezing milk...the bags are taking over my freezer!

  • are you freezing them laying down?  that way they are flat and store easier.

We have 400+ right now and yes, they are space consuming fiends! LOL

Wow I feel like a dummy, laying down! it's like a light bulb went off LOL. Unfortunately now I have to stare at those 200 oz until they're gone.

Don't worry... I felt the same way.  I had about 100 oz when someone told me to do this.  I am FINALLY defrosting my last upright bag!  WHOO HOO!

  • Laying down the bags to freeze is def. the trick.  Also, I'm just using our regular freezer (wish I had somewhere for a deep freezer), so to keep the bags contained I use a useable lunch bag/cooler.  It also helps to keep the bags from getting hit by warm air when we open/close the freezer. The one I got is kinda like this..

  • I also found if you make sure the bottom is tucked up nicely it slims the packaging just a little bit more! HTH
  • I lay them flat then put in large ziplock bags organized by week.  When we use more often, we will use the oldest first.  Also, I've heard not to store them on the door of the freezer, so I'd check that out.  Maybe someone else can confirm or deny this??

Ditto - door is the warmest place in the freezer. The farther back you go, the better off you are.

  • Ok then, stupid question: do you pour the milk in the bags, push the air out, seal it and then lay it flat? I'm just trying to figure out how that would work...

But I'm glad someone asked this. The bags do take up alot of room when they're standing up!

  • Someone posted a link to a tutorial about a week or so ago that showed a lady making a storage container out of a gift bag. She took a small to medium sized gift bag, cut a hole in the bottom on one side about an inch tall and as she filled bags, she laid them flat in the bag. The bag was almost the exact size of the milk bags and then you could stack them all the way up and the bag helped them freeze flat. Then your oldest milk is on the bottom and you can pull it out through that hole to use it and they move down in date order. It works much better for a deep freeze because you can stand the bag up, but if you have enough room in a normal freezer, it would work. Maybe search youtube for it or something. And I would suggest not putting the milk in the door of the freezer as other posters have...
  • You can also use this after they are frozen

  • I have about 890oz in my freezer (side by side fridge/freezer) and think every time I get to an increment of 100 that there is no more room.  Started with medela bags but now have all in Lisinoh bags frozen flat w/ bottom tucked, then I have them in 3 boxes each as big as the shelves would allow by date pulling out of 1 without a top (I've rotated a few times out of a closed box into the open box) and figure the closed boxes keep the milk from warming when we try to pull out the 1-2 frozen pizzas we have room for.  I am looking forward to having food in the house again one day and swear I will get a deep freezer next time, this rotation thing is an extra step each day.
