Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is it Thrush?

So DD when she is crying and I can see the roof of her mouth, there is a white on the top and gum areas. It doesnt look lumpy at all, it just looks like a white film. She ONLY gets bottles with breastmilk in the bottle and she is 2 months old. I have read that thrush usually looks like cottage cheese and mostly in newer babies. Anyone deal with thrush? Is it normal for the roof of the mouth to be white? Tonight she would not take a bottle much and just screamed like something hurt. Wanted to see what you all thought!!! Thanks!!!!!

Re: Is it Thrush?

  • Have you tried wiping it away? Thrush does not wipe away.

  • If it does not wipe away then yes, most likely. And if you do wipe it, it is harder to wipe off...if any does come off it is most likely red underneath, almost looks like open sores.

Ughg. That sucks. Good luck - thrush is so hard to get rid of =/

  • My pedi told me that it would be hard to wipe away and that it would be on the inside of the lips and on the cheek and prob. the roof of the mouth. My DD had a white tongue and I thought she had thrush but he said it was just "milk stained" tongue.

  • The past few days I have been wondering if she is allergic to my BM from the bottle because she cried when she eats, I am thinking if this is thrush that would explain the crying, doesnt it hurt?
  • If they are round white dots that feel hard to the touch, they may simply be something called Epstine's Pearls.  They are harmless and related to Milla (sp?) the little white dots newborns can get on their face.

I had thrush and thought the baby did too, but it turned out to be these Pearls.  They were on the gums and were a group of round raised white dots.

I hope its not thrush, because we've done that too, and it is not fun.
