2nd Trimester

Does anyone NOT want to be called Mommy?

Okay, this is completely trivial and probably strange but I just don't want to be called mommy.  I cringe a little whenever I hear that word and I think I prefer mama instead.  Am I alone?

Re: Does anyone NOT want to be called Mommy?

  • Not sure you will care once the baby gets here. I say ma, my sister says mom, and my brother says momma and she answers to them all.

  • Your kid will make that choice on their own anyway.  We always referred to me as Mommy, but my daughter started calling me "Mom" at the age of 3.  I don't like it.  It makes her sound like a little mini teenager.

  • DS calls me Mom and I prefer that to Mommy.  He's never used Mommy or Daddy.  We've always been Mom and Dad, probably because we always refer to ourselves with him as Mom and Dad.

  • I dont like mama (for me) at all.

I think Mommy will be just fine.

Exactly what I was about to write..

  • DD calls me "Mama," and baby #2 will, too.

If it changes as they get older, so be it, but I'll start them off on Mama because I like it better.

  • I go back and forth between calling my mother "Ma" and "Mommy."

I am not sure I really care what LO calls me, as long as he calls me. SS calls me "Bean" so if that caught on, I'd answer to that too.

  • I think this is actually the first time it's crossed my mind that I will be answering to Mommy or some variant thereof in the not-so-distant future.

     HOLY CRAP.

  • I, personally, don't like mama.

    I am more of a mummy/mommy person. :D

  • I don't really care, but I do somewhat prefer Mom. I'm not a cutesy type of person.

Ditto this exactly, except my DD's only 2!

     HOLY CRAP.

Smile It didn't really hit me either until I did my registry and kept seeing the "I love Mommy" onesies!

I agree I may not care what LO calls me but I know I'd rather DH refer to me as Mama instead of Mommy.  LO will take it from there...

  • I cringe at Mommy, too! DH and I are papa and mama. Our DS has called us Mom/Mommy or Dad/Daddy a handful of times and it's always just to be funny. I know eventually he'll start calling us mom and dad, but he's almost 4 and still calls us mama/papa, which I'm quite happy about!!
  • I call my mother:

mother, ma, mommy, mom..... she answers to all - and it all depends on the mood I am in.

  • I don't like Mommy.  I always refer to mine as Momma, and that's what I want to be called.

  • not sure you'll get to choose at first.  as someone who's still waiting to be called mom, i am just happy when she manages to say "Muuuuuuhhhh...."
  • We're a two-mom family, so we chose our favorites ahead of time.  My partner wanted to be Mommy, I wanted to be Mama.  So far so good, although it's darling when our daughter is excited about something and tries to talk to both of us at once, yelling "Moms!  Hey Moms!"

If you're married or partnered, just make sure that the other person is consistent in referring to you as Mama, and you should be good.

    Good luck!

LOL, my reaction was something like this.  I haven't really thought about it.  I am sure I'll love whatever my LO calls me!

  • I never really thought about it but mama was DD's first word so we've stuck with that plus it goes well with dada...not sure if she'll switch to mommy or stick with mama but that's what we use :)

  • oh my god wait until you hear it from your child!!!   seriously it just melts your heart and makes everyday worth living a little bit more than it already was.   i like momma and such too but mommy is fabulous.   and when you hear your child call your husband daddy for the first time-oh wow!!!!   just wait and then reserve the judgement

That is too cute!  Thanks for the advice too.

  • I feel the same way about Mama the OP feels about Mommy. ?I cringe every time I hear it, but that's totally just me. ?I'm a Mom/Mommy type girl, I guess. ?I don't remember calling my mother "Mommy," but I wouldn't be surprised if I did when I was little. ?Now it's always Mom. ?

I agree...I don't really care what my girls call me. I just love hearing them. FYI: Mine do say mommy and it is the sweetest word in the dictionary.

  • my brother, sister and I all called my mom Mama until like junior high when it started to sound pathetic for me to be calling my mom that when i was 12... so then we all switched to mom. lol there was never "mommy" for her.
  • When your child is crying out "Mommy" in the middle of the night trust me, the last thing on your mind is going to be "I hate it when s/he calls me that"

Build a bridge. You're going to be a mom. You're going to get called alot of things and told alot of things that you don't want to hear. ?

Oh, I don't think so.  I'll just lay in my bed and wait until they get it right.

    Ummmmm... you = funny!

And that may just give you a much-needed laugh when you're really in that situation.  Just giving yourself that 15-second humor break before cleaning up the puke really will make things better.
