Anyone use the North Shore Birth Center?

Just wondering about people's experiences there. I had my first son in the UK and they have a midwife run system so I was keen to go that route again since it worked well for me/us the first time around. The only problem is my husband is very worried about the birth center vs. hospital aspect of it all. While I had a midwife system in the UK we still delivered in the hospital - it was that or at home since there were no birth centers near us.  I'd like to be able to give him some more information to sort of ease his fears a bit... he's pushing for MGH, Brigham or Mt. Auburn at the moment but I quite liked the Birth Center when I went for my annual appointment so not sure what to do.

Re: Anyone use the North Shore Birth Center?

  • Hi ;)

I've attended a birth there (but before the new EFM regulations so I'm not sure how much has actually changed).  The birth center is very 'safe' as far as if there are any complications.  As you know, it is just across the street and there is open communication between the midwives at the BC and the hospital so if there was a serious complication they could have the ER prepped by the time you were transported across the street.  Plus the BC itself has some provisions for emergency too.

A freestanding birth center (not sure if NSBC still qualifies) is a great middle ground between a hospital and home birth.  You're attended by skilled and caring midwives who know how to facilitate normal birth (as in homebirth), and yet only moments away from emergency resources.

BTW, Congrats!  Keeping it on the DL for now?
