sleeping in the car seat

DS sleeps so well in his car seat it blows me away. Last night someone suggested I let him sleep in his car seat at night. I think this is kinda insane, but to be honest I've thought about it. Am I a bad mom? We are out of town and DS didn't sleep well last night. I think its b/c I had cabbage for dinner :( and he was gassy. Hopefully tonight will be better. I feel so bad for even considering this. Oh well, lack of sleep does crazy things to you, or at least that's my excuse for now! ;)

  • My pedi suggested it! LO hates it though.

  • DS is a good sleeper but would not sleep in his bassinet.  He would sleep in my bed or in a co-sleeper but not in his bed at night.  I had him with me at my 6 week check up and I asked for suggestions (I had tried everything) and she said, "He looks like he likes his carseat.  Put him in his crib sleeping in his carseat and he will get use to the environment and soon you won't need the seat."
  • Seriously we can do this??? That crib/car seat idea is awesome if it works. But the only thing is, being all cooped up my LO gets really gassy and lets it all out as soon as he is taken out of the car seat. I wouldnt want him to get tummy pains from being in there too long?

  • On our extra-fussy nights, we put her car seat in the crib and it really seems to help.

I actually just spoke with a mom of four yesterday about this. My LO sleeps in his lamb swing. He has since he was about 2 weeks old. He just isn't comfortable laying flat in his bassinet. I even tried propping him up, on his side and yes even on his stomach (with an angelcare monitor) he doesn't like anything but his swing to sleep.

    Anyway back to the point...

Her daughter was the same exact way except with the car seat. Her daughter slept in it until she was six months old. There is no long term damage and she isn't a bad mother.  She reassured me that the baby will be fine sleeping in his swing. Do what you need to do so both you and the baby are rested. Eventually the baby will be ready to transition but it may not be until they are slightly older.

I'm taking this advice and letting him sleep in his swing. In a couple of weeks I am going to try to start getting him to sleep flat on his back in his crib but for now...survival mode! Sleep is a good thing for mom and baby.

  • My pedi suggested it, also, but it makes me nervous for some reason--just Mommy instinct. So we don't do it--the only time he sleeps in there is if I come home from having him out and he's napping in there.
  • DS was so gassy the first few weeks and the only thing that helped was to let him sleep in the carseat. For some reason he was less gassy when he slept in more of a sitting position. I let him sleep in his carseat in the crib for almost a month, and the transition to just the crib was so simple. Now he's been STTN in his just his crib for 3 weeks with no problems Smile

  • Our doctor suggested it for reflux so I guess it's totally fine!

This, right down to the lamb swing!

My pedi said it's fine and also recommended the carseat.

  • Wow, I guess my pedi is different. I was never comfortable with the whole sleeping in a carseat thing and later on found out that my Pedi is against it too. He says the seats can restrict their oxygen. I knew that it was reccommended for infants with reflux.

Ditto - I don't like how his head is scrunched down into his neck in there that much.

  • Our lo has the most awful reflux.  We tried elevating her cradle mattress, the swing, her bouncer...nothing was working!  Our pedi recommended letting her sleep in her carseat and it's made a huge difference.
