If you were induced or discussed it with your dr - ?

Someone I know is due the 10th. Her dr told her he'd induce the 14th but if she doesn't have any progress after 2 hours, he's doing a c/s (which she agreed to). Did anyone's dr do anything like this? I've never heard of such a thing. 2 hours doesn't seem like long at all.

Re: If you were induced or discussed it with your dr - ?

  • 2 hours - really??? My doc wasn't going to let me go past 12 hours after starting the induction. I delivered ds about 10 hours after we started.

  • It seems like a long time not to have any cervical changes, no?
  • Did not discuss it because I didn't want one and I told my midwife this from the beginning.  I must laugh though because the last week I went to my appointment the nurse kept trying to get me to be induced that next day.  I was like, thank you, but no, we will wait.  If it came down to be being overdue, I'm sure she would have discussed it.

My sister-in-law with her second was going to be induced because she didn't want to be in the hospital for Thanksgiving.  The baby cam early, but still, she asked to be induced.

She never discussed a c/s either with me, my midwife that is.

If it would have been medically necessary, we would have done it.

I have no idea, really. I had a scheduled c/s. It just seemed like a short time?

  • I went in at 6 am to start induction, and was checked every 4 hours, and when 5 pm rolled around and I was still less than 1 cm, my dr said I could  go another 4 hrs and see if I have progress, or go for the c/s then. I chose to go for the c/s, as I was starving, 1 weeks past due date, and my whole body hurt. Good thing I chose c/s, because I have a heart shaped uterus, and my dd was never going to drop, and i would never have dilated.
  • If they induce with no progress to begin with, there's a very high chance of ending up with a c/s.  My doctor didn't want to attempt an induction at all with no progress--he wanted to just go ahead and do the c/s.  So, perhaps her doctor just feels like he should give some attempt at an induction, but doesn't see the point in letting it go too far.
  • The morning I was going to be induced my water broke so I ended up going into labor on my own.  I was in labor for 18 hours before my Dr. even mentioned doing a c-section.  At that point I was still only 6 cm dilated and the baby was wedged in my cervix so he said he was willing to let me try for another hour but he didn't see me progressing any further.  We decided to just do the c-section.

I know that once your water breaks they like the baby out with in 24 hours and I don't know if the timeframe is less when they induce you but 2 hours???  That seems really short to me.

  • i was induced, but they told me the cervadil needed 12 hours first, so i'm not sure if they would have stopped the pit at some point to do a c/s. it never came up beforehand.

  • I was induced, but that was not disccused and it sounds absurd.

ETA: Prior to my induction, I was not dilated at all....completely closed, and I didn't end up with a c/s.  I too was told the cervadil had to be in place for about 12 hours

Good point. Her mom was in labor 22 hours with the first before they did a c/s. She was stuck in her pelvis so far they had a hard time pulling her out. They're built the same, but hopefully she won't have the same troubles.

  • ::waving hand high here::

I was induced on a Friday at 2pm and, yeah, I ended up having a c/s on Sunday at 8:25 am because I had only progressed to 6 or 7 cm...I can't remember.  I was in labor for 42 hours....not very fun.  When I went in I was at 1 cm and then I got to 2 cm realtively fast and then I STALLED at 4 cm for HOURS ( most of Friday night and almost all of Sat).  At 7 pm on Saturday I asked for a c/s and my doctor told me "if I do that for all the women that ask for it, that is all I would be doing....you have 13 more hours before we hit the 24 hour period of your water being broken, but if you have not progressed anymore by 9:00 pm we will do it."  And wouldn't you know...I had progressed by9 pm (said a huge DAMN IT...and then got the good drugs).  But nothing by 8:00 am...so off to c/s land I went.  THANK GOD!!

  • 2 times inducee here.  IT depends if they start with cervadil (which is usually inserted for 8-12 hours) or if pitocin is just started.  I have had it both ways and it seems that if pitocin is started but her cervix is not ripe, she will not progress (dialate).  If he takes the time to do cervadil (here we are admitted at midnight to allow that to happen), it should be successful.

W/ DD1 my indiction was pitocin for 8 hours, cervdail & pitocin.  DD was born after 35 hours.

DD2 was cervadil then pitocin and she was born after 15 hours.

I would not consent to a c/s after 2 hours!

  • pfftt.. i was given a cervidil the night before my due date.  I made no progress by the morn and had a c/sec by 9:15am the morn of my due date.  I never experienced the first bit of labor.  It rocked.
  • I had the cervadil put in at 7pm and taken out at 7am and had only dialated to 2 from 1 even though my contractions were off the chart the entire time. I started the pitocin at 9am (so I could eat) and they broke my water around 1. I delivered her naturally at 3:40. Two hours would not have been enough time for me! I didn't do anything in less than 2 hours.
  • My doctor never discussed how long he'd let me labor after we started the induction. I was 0cm when we scheduled it at 41 weeks but had progressed to a whopping 1cm when I checked in for my induction two nights later. I got Cervadil at 11:30 the night before, was still 1cm in the morning, started Pitocin at 7:30am, and DD was born at 2:53pm -- so almost 8 hours after the Pitocin.

Two hours doesn't seem long enough at all. I can't imagine a doctor saying that unless there's more to the story that you don't know.

  • I had a medically necessary induction at 38 weeks. I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced.  I had cervadil for 12 hours, (no change) then pitocin for 12 (slight change), then 12 more hours of cervadil, (no change or negative depending on who you asked), then 12 more hours of pitocin (no change), another night of something else, negative change again, another day of useless pitocin (highest dose and hardly any contractions), and another night of soemthing I don't remember anymore.

My OB let me go a long long time (80 hours total), even more than 24 hours after he attempted to break my water (I'm not sure it worked as there was no gush but DS had low fluid which was the reason for hte induction).  We had talked at legnth about my desire for a vaginal birth and he was on board.  DS was monitored the whole time and was never in distress.

  • My dr. was willing to let me go 14hrs after the start of induction.

  • That sounds insane to me. I was on pitocin for 8 hours to progress from 2 cm to 4 cm, and then things speeded up after I got the epidural.

But I know there are docs and hospitals out there that are like that. My sister did her OB nursing round at a hospital in the Midwest where it was their policy to do c-sections if a mom had pushed for 2 hours and not given birth yet.

Thank God, my OB is nothing like that -- and we discussed beforehand that she didn't have arbitrary limitations on how long I could be in a certain phase of labor. I pushed for 2.5 hours and had a successful vaginal birth.

  • I was induced and it didn't work. At the end of 24 hours they offered the c/s or another day of induction. For some reason they really pushed for the day 2 induction. I should have just had the c/s then. I didn't and it hit the fan the next day. DS and I almost didn't make it.

Not sure why they're planning for 2 hours then a c/s, but given my experience, I'd be all over it. And she'll no doubt end up with a c/s, rarely do inuctions take under 2 hours.

  • I was induced but never thought to ask that? whoops.  It would have been a moot point cause I delivered within 6.5 hours of the induction starting.

But if I was your friend I would not OK a c/s after two hours!

Yikes!!!  I am sorry that it took so long...I thought mine was bad..wow!! Crying

  • I was induced because my water broke and I wasn't dilated.  The Dr said I would need to deliver within 24 hours to reduce the risk of getting an infection due to my water breaking.

  • wha? I had a failed induction for 12 hours and we didn't even discuss c/s then.  C/S wasn't discussed until it was clear ds wasn't descending, I had a fever and had already been pushing for over an hour.  No progress in two hours is a little limiting IMO.

  • Maybe they meant after two hours of pushing? I was induced and then in labor for 30+ hrs. After 2.5 hrs of pushing the doctor told me that they don't allow ppl to push for more than 3 hrs and he's thinking I need a c/s.

  • My induction started with Cervadil which was left in for 12 hours so yeah, 2 hours would have been crazy in my situation.

Also, after the cervadil was taken out they gave me another 3 1/2 hours to progress before they started pitocin and broke my water. ?The doc said she would give me 18 hours after breaking my water. ?Two hours is wayyyyyy too short. ?I stayed at 4 cm for at least 4 hours and still wound up with a easily delivered vaginal birth. ??

  • i was never given a timeline.  the only time c/s was brought up was when DS wouldn't come out after 2 vacuum attempts and heart decels.
