Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Choking scare last night:

At 4 am I heard LO cough on the monitor and went in his room to comfort him back to sleep bc it was too early for feeding.  He started choking and I was trying to pat his back to clear his throat.  Usually he has great choking reflexes and catches his breathe easily.  He was not breathing or crying so I ran in to the bedroom with him and woke DH.  We were both trying to get him to breathe normal, but he was not crying and still sounded blocked.  We went in the bathroom and DH dumped cold water on both of us and turned the lights on.  LO screamed and cried.  He was so mad, but I was so happy to hear him screaming.  I was so scared.  He must have spit up and it created mucos that blocked up his breathing from his nose and an air bubble was blocking his throat.  I kept him up for over and hour playing and then nursed him and put him back to sleep in his crib.  I slept on the floor next to his crib the rest of the morning and woke at any noise.  He is fine, but what a scare.

We are signing up for baby CPR classes.

  • so scary!!! i'm so glad he's ok! i would've slept on the floor too!
  • Thank goodness all turned out well. Choking is one of my biggest fears.
  • My baby would choke and stop breathing on every feed. If it happens again stroke his back hard. this usually makes them start breathing again

  • That happened to us a couple of weeks ago, and I probably cried for a good half an hour afterwards.  I'm certified in professional level CPR, so I was able to help her quickly, but it's still so different when you're dealing with your own child.
