'ello...
My three week old daughter was recently diagnosed with acid reflux. During feedings she arches her back and screams because of the pain when the milk comes part way back up. She doesn't spit up excessively but it does happen every few feedings and that upsets her even more (it often comes out her nose and chokes her for a moment). We have taken her to the doctor twice and she has been prescribed Ranitidine to help reduce the acid. We were also told to add rice cereal to her bottle (I pump and she takes breast milk exclusively) and keep her upright for at least 30 minutes after feedings. We're trying all these things and still having no luck. I'm frustrated with the doctor?s office because they just tell us it's "normal" and she'll grow out of it with time. Okay, fine, I get that but my daughter is in pain and I want to do something to comfort her! I'm wondering if any of you have dealt with this and had any success... if so, please let me know. Thank you!
Re: Baby with reflux (from 0-3)
You need to try a different medicine. Ask the pedi to try a different med. Prevacid is expensive. We had DS on Axxid (which is also expensive. For us $44 a month!) It worked great! We added Reglan at a later date and his reflux worsened. Not all medicines work for all babies.
I've never heard of Rantidine (sp?). And, unless your LO's spitting up is excessive, I would hold off on adding rice just yet. She still so tiny!
Elevate the crib mattress with rolled towels, sheets, etc. Definitely keep her upright for 30min. This can be a pain, but it's worth it. Smaller amounts at each feeding and more frequent feedings will cut down on reflux pain and spitting up.
She will grow out of it eventually. DS is no longer getting the Axid and we do not have to elevate his crib mattress any longer.
It'll get better!
My DS has reflux as well. We were going through the same things as you stated, especially in the evening. Our pedi put him on Pepcid, which isn't cheap but well worth it! After giving him his first dose he was a different baby, I can't even tell you! I would definitely ask your pedi to try some medication, you will be shocked at the difference. Good Luck!
