Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

WWYD?

We're going skiing in Angel Fire in January (for my birthday) and the closest airport is 3hrs away in Albuquerque. Would you rather drive over 10 hrs to Angel Fire or Fly for less than 2 hrs and then drive 3 hrs to Angel Fire. We?re staying at DH?s aunts condo so it?ll be free, so we could spend the extra $$ to fly, which would be about $200/person. I?m just trying to find the least miserable way up there. Colton will be with us and I thought I was going to kill myself while we drove to Yellowstone this summer.

What would you do?? MIL is going with us to babysit but wants to drive so I could convice her to drive to Albuquerque and pick us up at the airport and then we could drive to Angel Fire.

Anyway, WWYD?

Re: WWYD?

  • I would rather fly. I don't know how your DS is in the car, but mine gets really antsy and his car seat makes him really hot.

  • I'd probably drive... I look at it this way:

time to get to the airport/parking (30-60 min?)

get to the airport at least an hour early (flying with toddlers = extra time to get checked in/get through security)

2 hour flight (assuming there are no delays!)

time to de-plane and get bags (30-45 minutes?)

You're already somewhere around 5 hours, plus the 3 hour drive to AF.

If you drive, you can stop whenever you want and let DS run around for a few minutes.  Sounds like you'll have someone that could be  in the backseat with him which should make the drive easier.  You can pack whatever you want and not worry about baggage fees.

Of course, DD is a pretty good traveler and we've only taken her on about a 5 hour car ride.  Is it possible to drive at night so he'd sleep most of the time?

  • I would rather drive and ike is a horrible car rider.  It is SUCH a PITA to fly with a kiddo, between making sure you have enough formula/food/juice for the baby and making sure all those things can get through airport security.  Then the waiting for boarding trying to entertain kiddo, then trying to entertain kiddo on the plane so people will stop giving you the death glare.  Ugh, I told DH anything under 10 hours drive we are driving from now on.  Ike did okay when we drove to SC, of course that could have something to do with the fact that i allowed him to eat an entire bag of animal crackers ;o)
  • I would drive.  With the 3 hour drive from the airport you get all the potentially bad things that go with taking a driving trip anyway.  I'd rather not also have to deal with the annoyances that go with flying.

  • I haven't flown with the boys yet so I can't speak to that, but I agree with the other posters.  If you have to drive that far anyway, might as well just drive the whole way.

We just got back from Arkansas from our family vacation/reunion.  It is about a 6 1/2 hour drive to get there.  We stopped for lunch and then again for a snack.  The rest of the time the boys were quiet in the backseat.  We got DVD players for them and it was the best decision ever!  I don't let them watch very much TV/DVDs at the house so it was quite entertaining for them.  My sister joked that they are going to want to go on vacation all the time!!  We got a set at Target for $130.

  • Okay, I think that settles it. We will probably drive. Wasn't too sure if it would be more of a hassle to fly and then drive or to just drive the whole thing. We'll probably drive all night.

    Thanks girls!
