Info on Decaf

Hi ladies :)  Ok, so I am certainly no pregnancy expert since this is my first, but I would consider myself pretty knowledgable when it comes to both coffee and tea (I work for a coffee and tea importer and therefore have to be knowledgable).

Decaf Coffee-  I know that it is ok to drink during pregnancy according to most Doctors, but I think that it is worth knowing that decaf coffee (unless it is a Swiss Water Decaf) is put through a chemical wash to remove the caffeine.  In most cases the chemical is EthylAcetate.

here's a link to an article that had some good info on decaf coffee.

Decaf Tea- if you are going to drink Decaf tea just make sure it is a CO2 decaf...it is a more natural process that does not use any chemicals.  :)

Sorry to discourage anyone who is really enjoying their decaf cup of joe in the morning...but I feel like it is better to be informed so that you know what you're drinking :)

If you have any tea or coffee questions feel free to ask...I'm full of knowledge when it comes to this subject.

Re: Info on Decaf

  • This is good info..I read it early on in pregnancy too.  I limit myself to a small cup of starbucks decaf coffee a day, and my baby seems to be a-ok.  I think with most things in pregnancy moderation is key!!!

  • I agree :)  I don't think decaf coffee is bad in moderation...I just wanted to provide a little info so that people didn't think it was a great thing to over indulge in :)

  • I actually decided to stay away from decaf beverages even before I was pregnant for that reason.  I think it's actually better to have the caffeine.

  • This is great info! I know every one has different opinions, in my situation my OB feels comfortable to keep away from caffeine because of my mc last year. I am not saying that was the cause of it, but I still drank 1 cup last year of coffee and this time around she said to just stay away from it.  With that said I had drank a cup of decaf every other day, but lately my taste buds or stomach doesn't really want it.  Very strange since I was a complete coffee junkie Stick out tongue.
  • I am the same way.  I used to love coffee.  In fact our wedding had a coffee theme to it.  But anymore it's usually only once a week that I have coffee and that is in the form of a latte, highly disguised.  When my DH comes up to me with heavily coffee smelling breath, I sometimes have to get out of his space for fear of nausea.
