2nd Trimester

weird comment from my mom

So we have our big U/S today at 3:45 and I was talking to my mom last night telling her that I may stop by her house since the ultrasound is like 5 minutes away from her.  She says she won't be home from work yet, so I tell her, "well I was thinking of going shopping first to buy an outfit for the baby since we will know if it is a boy or a girl".  Then she says to me "be careful buying stuff you probably don't want to buy anything yet"  I find this really weird because I have bought NOTHING yet, not an outfit, not a bib, nothing at all.  I just find it really weird that my mom would say this. I don't know if she just wanted to be the first to get me something or if she thinks something is going to go wrong.

Thanks mini-vent over!

Re: weird comment from my mom

  • I would try not to read too much into this.  Maybe she just meant you may not want to buy anything b/c you still have a shower(s) coming or something?  Did you ask her what she meant?

  • did she ever loose a baby or pregnancy? My aunt said something similar but she had 2 still births- so I understand where she's coming from- but ti was a little rain on my parade

  • So annoying! I hate when people give unsolicited advice. Sometimes I think that people just LOVE to give pregnant women advice to prove that "Oh I am so much more experienced at this then you." PS. Ive bought tons of outfits - go shop till you drop!

  • my parents made similar comments until about 20 weeks. My dad is an OB though and sees all of the things that could possibly go wrong so I think that was just their way of being guarded.
  • People who have had a loss or are very superstitious don't like to get something before LO arrives. Or, it could be anything.  Do what you want and don't be concerned.

  • yeah I was thinking that maybe she had lost a baby later in her pregnancy and she was just trying to protect you? ?I would still buy something little and bring it to her house and then ask her what she meant by that comment? ?Cause I always read into things that people say (I think it's a curse, lol) and I have to say, I would want to know what she meant. ?GL at the big U/S!!! ?So exciting!!

  • my impression when i read this was that she thought what if the gender guess was wrong? maybe she meant it that way.
  • Go shopping!

    And GL today!

  • Ditto PP, I wouldn't read too much into this.  She may have meant several innocent things, like a shower is in the near future, or the possibility of the gender being wrong, or just that it is hard to buy ahead for another season.  Sometimes people forget how exciting it is to be expecting.

  • My mom never lost a pregnancy, or at least she never told me about it if she did, but my grandmother did.

I am still going to go shopping and just get one outfit and take it to her to tell her the gender.

  • Buy what you want.

My parents have said for DH & I not to buy anything because they know that we will get a lot for my showers. And they want to save us some money.

  • My mom is superstitious in this way too.  Don't sweat it.  She didn't have all of the ultrasounds, tests and regular checkups that I get to have with this baby.  So times have changed!
  • I have no clue what your mom meant by this comment. I would suggest talking to her about it. And if you wanna buy something buy away.

  • My big u/s is next thursday, and I plan on buying something too.  I was thinking a picture frame that says "my first photo" in blue or pink.  I saw some really cute ones at our hospital gift shop.

I also thought maybe she was just talking about an upcoming shower, but I would just ask her.  Tell her you had "baby brain" and after thinking about it wondered what she meant.  GL.
