OK this is one of the last things on my shopping list. What baby medicines are a must and which are a waste of money??? Or do you recommend me to just buy as I need? Thanks ladies
buy as you need them....they sent us home with a bottle of tylenol b/c of LO's circ, and we ended up getting mylicom for gas...when you do get something i recommend buying 2, one for the diaper bag and one for home.

It's a waste to get them early, but when you need them, buy two.

I got Gas Relief, Motrin, and Tylenol at my showers, which I have not used yet.
But I suggest keeping Saline Drops handy for LO's dry, stuffy nose. I don't know if you have it yet, but don't forget Rubbing Alcohol Pads for Cord Stump Care. I almost forgot it before LO's arrival.

You don't need alcohol for the cord. Medical studies have found there is no benefit, that it does not prevent infection and actually causes the cord stump to heal more slowly.
I would just buy meds as needed. One tip I will give you is to buy medicine dye-free. That way when your baby spits it out, throws up, etc., you don't have red dye all over the place.

We used what the hospital sent us home with first, then I think we just used the Target brand. I liked the pads better than cotton balls because we could clean around the stump without worrying about cotton getting stuck on the cord. It was also easier to control how much alcohol dripped onto his belly button because we worried about it dribbling into his diaper.
We have Tylenol, gas drops, and gripe water. We use them all. Tylenol not as often because I only use it when he's screaming in pain; gas drops most of all because that's usually the first course of action when he seems uncomfortable. Gripe water I use mainly for hiccups though a lot of people use it for excessive fussiness.
You might also want to consider some Motrin as well, because you can use it in tandem with Tylenol so that LO is always on some pain relief when doses of one stop working but you can't give more yet. That tends to not be until the teething stage though, unless your LO gets sick or injured.?
ETA: I agree with getting two, especially of the gas drops. Gripe water has to be refrigerated, so don't bother doubling up on that one. And saline drops are a good idea too for congestion since you can't ask LO to blow his/her nose quite yet
Contemplating the snow.

Motrin should not be given to newborns, so there's no need for her to buy it now.

I would suggest Gripe Water, Mylicon, Tylenol drops and Saline nose drops. That is what was suggested to me and I am glad to have all of them.
My feeling is that you don't want to be without one of these at 2am, so it is best just to get them now. I have used everything but the Tylenol, but my pediatrician told me to give it to LO if he has a fever in the night and we are waiting to hear back from him.
rubbing alcohol is up in the air. My hospital said not to use it, my ped said to. We did and LO's stump fell off in 2 weeks. I already had a bottle, so I just applied it to cotton pads.
DITTO ABOUT DYE FREE. I USE TYLENOL, MYLACON, AND GRIPE WATER. AND I LIKE TO KEEP STOCKED UP ON THESE TYPES OF THINGS. I ALSO HAVE ONE FOR HOME AND ONE FOR THE DIAPER BAG.
I DIDNT LIKE THE ALOCOHOL PADS, I HAD THEM FROM MY PREGNANCY, BUT I PREFERED TO JUST SQUEEZE THE ALCOHOL FROM A COTTON BALL.
I had Mylicon and Tylenol on hand, and I think they are good to have - in the early days if you need them, it might be hard to get out to the store. I got gripe water a few weeks in.

Ditto this.
I was told just warm soapy water for cord care. No alcohol. It fell off within 10 days.
