Prevacid--when to increase dose?

Hey!  Just a quick question.  Nurse at Pedi's office said we could increase Gianna's prevacid dose--but not to give her the entire solutab.  Like, I guess 3/4ths of one 15 mg solutab?  I estimate that she is around 9 1/2-10 lbs.  She was on 1/2 of the solutab. I wonder, can I just give her the whole tablet?  I just kinda think it would be tough to cut that little pill in 4ths and effectively give her the meds that way, especially since not all the medicine is equally distributed in the tablet.

At what weight did you get the all clear to give the entire 15 mg solutab?

Any pharmacists out there or other prevacid experts have an opinion on this?

TIA!

Re: Prevacid--when to increase dose?

  • It's really hard to say (as a former prevacid rep) because there is no right answer- since docs do all sorts of things with babies under 1 y/o... which prevacid is not approved for (but commonly used and considered to be very safe).

The solutabs are NOT meant to be split- and the meds are not evenly distributed in the tablet- so if you give 1/2 the tablet- that 1/2 might not have 1/2 the meds... it might have more or less - so it's really not very accurate to split the tablet at all - though, it is done all the time- and usually is not a huge problem.

this website has some great info https://www.marci-kids.com/medications.html#ppis  - good dosing info on there... though the site is very Zegerid friendly- because the authors used it in their studies... I do not believe Zegerid has gotten an approval for pediatric use- though, the main drug in it, prilosec, is approved in pediatrics- but no PPIs are approved under 1 y/o.

sorry i can't give you a great answer.

funny thing- my son, Grayson, was on prevacid for a little while- and we went backwards to Zantac 3x's a day which worked better for him. Go figure :)  But for most babies- prevacid will work better- because it is simply a much better type of drug than the class that Zantac is in.
