Babies: 3 - 6 Months

question about rice cereal

how much cereal do you give wet and how many times a day? my baby is five months... also how old was your baby when they started and how much did you start with?

Re: question about rice cereal

  • With DD I tried at 4 months, she wasn't interested so I held off for 6. We started once/day for the first month, then moved up to twice a day for awhile. I think we moved to 3 times/day around 10 months.

We started with a small amount, maybe a tablespoon. I just stopped measuring and eyeballed it to make a consistency DD liked. The beginning was very watery, then after a couple weeks I thickened it.

  • We did it for three days when he turned four months, once per day (1 tablespoon rice cereal mixed with about 3 tablespoons of formula). It has a reputation for binding up LOs - after three days DS had mild constipation so we moved on to oatmeal.
  • i just started cereal on monday.  i did a couple of teaspoons mixed with BM to make it more on the runny side.  He hasn't eaten it all, but is just getting used to the texture, etc...it doesn't help that he has been soooo tired when i have gone to feed him the cereal the past couple of days.

    hope this helps.

  • 5tablespoons 2xday (morning and night) we have given it to him since 4 months

we started with 1tbsp a day and worked our way up

  • We started cereal right at 4 months. At first, we didn't do much. We did about 1 oz. of formula to 1 tsp. of cereal. Gradually increasing the amount. Now he gets 2 oz. of formula to approx. 2 1/2 Tbsp. of cereal but I just kind of eyeball it. We will be starting 1st foods as a second meal on Friday when he turns 5 months.

  • We started rice cereal at 4 months. DS wasn't thrilled so after three days we switched to oatmeal. He was ok with it at that point, but we added a small baby spoonful of stage 1 applesauce. Now he loves it. I mix 2 tbsp of dry cereal (usually one of each -- oatmeal and rice) with just shy of one ounce of his formula.
