Could he really be hungry again?

William has literally not gone more than an hour and fifteen minutes all day without a feeding.  Usually he has a couple of long stretches (3 hours or so) where he doesn't feed...but yesterday and today it's like he is starving.  Is he really hungry, or could it be that he just wants to suck?  We haven't given him a pacifier yet, so I'm not sure if he's using me as a pacifier.  How can I tell if he's really hungry or not?  Any words of wisdom?

Re: Could he really be hungry again?

  • When B does this, I assume a growth spurt...perhaps that is what it is?

If he does "flutter" sucking, I know he is using me as a pacifier.  Also, if he isn't "eating like he means it" (what I call non-neutrative sucking, haha)...I know he is using my boob as a pacifier.

  • Yes.  It is likely a growth spurt.  For the first several months I followed the "watch the baby, not the clock" mantra.  DS did not really fall into a feeding schedule till about 3 months.  For the first 3 months, DS could eat every 1/2 hour for several hours and then go 2 or 3 hours, and then every 1/2 hour till bedtime, and then sleep for 6 to 8 hours.

  • For the first few months you should follow the baby's cues not a clock or schedule.  He's only a couple days old and could very well be hungry.  He's also going to go through a couple growth spurts in the next 6-8 weeks were he will do nothing but nurse.  It's a short time period for all of this but eventually he'll get himself in his own schedule.  Just hunker down and enjoy the snuggle time and drink plenty of fluids as well as eat and get some rest.
  • They eat very frequently in those early weeks... I wouldn't worry too much.  William and your breasts sort out how much he needs.  =)  And if he is using you as a pacifier...well, it may not be a tangible need, but it's still a need you are fulfilling for him, right?  Good luck!
