Curious about Hep. B and newborns

We went on our hospital tour last night and they were going over what happend to your baby after a c section. They also sais that it is standard for them to get a hep. B shot. My older kids didn't have one until they started school. Just wondered if any newborns , younger kids got the vaccine at birth.

Thanks

  • it's standard procedure for all births here.  We opted out (have to sign a consent form so you have the option to refuse).  She got the first Hep B vax at her 2 month appointment- it's required for school entry here and she's in daycare.

  • I think this is the one we held off until the first pedi visit (ended up being after that, but you get the idea).  We weren't high risk.  =)

^^This. It's standard for all vaginal and c-section hospital births. You can sign a waiver and decline it though. I plan to decline it when dd is born - we will get it, I just don't see the point of doing it 5 seconds afters she's born since I do not have Hep B myself and that's the only way she's going to contract it at that point.

  • It's standard here (NY) as well, but we also declined it. He just received it at his 2mos appt.

  • It's been standard to receive it in the hospital since the early 90's (1991, I think?). Your older kids probably got it, too. You can decline it--I can't figure out why a child with a mom without hep b would need it.
  • DS got it a few day after birth to go ahead and get it over with.  Yes he's low risk, but there is no benefit in waiting, and I figured whoever came up with the vaccine schedule put a bit more thought into it than I am going to.

  • DS had it much later than normal because we were in the UK and they don't do it routinely. It's not even part of their vax schedule at all unless you're in a very small high risk category. We asked for it for "travel purposes" in order to get it done to fit the US schedule since we knew he'd end up in school here someday. We'll probably waive it at the hospital here and ask for it to be done at a later date. I'm not keen on vaxing a baby that early to be honest. I'm also going to look into signing a waiver for the eye ointment and if they can do oral vitamin k instead of the jabs.
  • It's standard but you can wait for first pedi visit or 2 month appt. No biggie if you're low risk.
  • We declined it and won't be getting it until she's ready to start school.
