Suggestions for a nursery in a studio apt?

DH and I recently downsized (big time!). We moved from 3 bedroom rental house to a very very small studio apartment. We plan on staying there for 6 mo or maybe even a year after LO is born. I've found lots of advice about how to deal with such a compact area, but very little on decoration and organization.

Any suggestions on the logistics of it? Also, any advice from people with experience would be nice too.

  • Maybe you could buy one of those standing screens to set apart the nursery area?

  • I'm in the same boat (or going to be very soon). DH and I are in a very small one bedroom, and come december will be moving into something more affordable so DH can keep going to school, that means something even smaller. I'm interested in what others have to suggest.
  • We don't have a studio, but we do have a 1 bedroom. The "nursery" is a pack n play beside my bed, and a dresser that's doubling as a changing table. I have a Closetmaid rack up over a shelf that holds all her blankets, diapers, etc. and all her hang-up clothes on the rack. I just put some pretty pink stuff up... like a board I can put pictures on, a "Sweet Pea" sign. I'd love to do a big giant K above the pack n play... but haven't got around to it yet. My glider is sitting in the middle of the floor in our bedroom, covered in clothes right now. LOL.

Good luck! It's rough. I would LOVE to have an entire room to use... but no such luck.

  • We don't live in a studio, but our place is just over 600 sq.feet, so I can commiserate to some degree. We got a dresser that is tall and skinny for a small footprint, you could just use a basinnet to start with, not a full crib (sell one to get the other), and I'll just be doing a minimal ammount of decoration like a few paper lanterns, some abstract whimsical pieces of art, and a throw rug in the corner with the baby's stuff. All fun and colorful, but in the taste of the rest of the house too. It not too babyish. So far so good. Its not like the baby is going to be like "Where is my light blue wall with bunnies painted on it?"
  • I am in the same situation kind of.  DH and I got our of our 3BR rental while we look for a house to buy, we're staying with my parents. We have a pretty large bedroom here so we've seperated it into our part and baby's part.  The crib, changing table, and dresser are on one side and our bed, dresser and nightstands are on the other. I keep the glider on my side but we have plenty of room still. I plan on being in our own house by February though.

  • https://www.ohdeedoh.com has a lot of great ideas for nurseries & kids rooms - and I know they've done a few about small spaces. Worth a look!

  • I saw a baby bed once that was a bed and attached to the end was a changing table with a bunch of drawers underneath.  I thought it was cute for a small space.  I would also make sure to decorate with things that match the rest of the room. You dont need to make it look babyish.  I would put a rug under the bed and rocker to tie it all together as the babies area and it would be a good place to play on the floor.  I would also just put the babies name or initials on the wall to keep it simple but cute.

  • We are in a small 1 bedroom apartment - not quite a studio, but very similar issues w/ space/decorating.  First, letting go of the idea that an entire room is needed in order for you to feel like you "nested" and made a nice space for your LO is a good start.  I was upset at the beginning but we came up with a very nice alternative.

Our living room is a funny shape, so we took the area behind our couch and made it into our "baby nook".  It has a pak n' play, changing table with cabinet underneath, rocking chair and a little rug to centralize the space as it's own "room".  DH hung some fabric covered panels he made on the wall (since we can't paint) and it made for some cute decoration/splash of color.  We tried to keep the colors match/coordinate wtih our living room stuff b/c they are essentially in the same room.

For sleeping we got a "Cradle" instead of a bassinet...a "cradle" is a little bit bigger, and it can sleep a newborn up to 6 months instead of 3 - which is going to buy us enough time to move/upgrade or figure out if we are staying here and need a real crib.  We put the cradle in our small bedroom and are going to hang a cuple pictures on the wall to differentiate the space in there.  You can buy "cradle bedding" at Babies r Us which made me feel "nesty" becuase it's essentially mini crib bedding, with a bumper and everything.

I have some pics in my blog - the cradle pictures are further back, but the baby nook photos are in my most recent entry, I think.

Good luck!!  It CAN be done!

  • PURGE!

I live in a 580 sq. ft. 1br apartment, so I have a bit more space than you. I am trying to get rid of stuff every week. Right now I am working on my closet. It is easy to get rid of my regular clothes because I can't put them on and get nostalgic about them.

Because baby will be sharing our room I haven't done any "decorating". I am mindful to get baby items that look good in the adult space and not bring in anything unnecessary.
