3rd Trimester

Flying at 32 weeks

So, I am going on a 3 and a half hour plane flight to my cuz's wedding next week and I will be 32 weeks pregnant. My doctor said there is nothing to worry about other then going into pre-term labor and having to deliver there which could happen here as well. But when I tell people I am flying at 32 weeks they are kinda giving me weird looks, or comments like "they are letting you FLY!!!" Am I crazy for going?

Re: Flying at 32 weeks

  • I'm flying next week (45 min flight) and a coworker thought I'd grown a 2nd head.  She could not believe my doc told me it was ok!!  I was going to drive (4 hours) but the doctor suggested flying because it would be a long drive having to stop for the bathroom so often.

  • Nope! I flew for 2 1/2 hours at the same place in my pregnancy. I'd make sure your airline doesn't require a note from the doctor saying you're good to fly. Ours did, even though they didn't end up checking the note...

  • My dr said I could fly through 32 weeks, and that's it.  If your dr says it's ok, then I wouldn't worry about it.
  • I flew a week or two ago - shorter flights but I had to fly a few times - and it really wasn't a big deal.  No one at the airline gave me the slightest look at all.

I would suggest bringing a note from your doctor just in case, however.  Also try to drink a bottle of water per hour on the flight (there are slightly increased risks of blood clots with both pregnancy and flying, so this helps with that, plus the air is so dry on a plane) and walk a little (you'll probably need to go to the bathroom after the water anyway).  Oh, and an aisle seat makes getting to the loo easier.  If you've had swelling, compression stockings can help.  And a small pillow for your back in case your seat is crappy.  But seriously, it's so not a big deal.

  • I wouldn't worry about it!  But bring a note from your doctor just in case the airline makes a fuss.

  • I know I'm a few weeks behind you - but I flew last week on several flights.  One was 2.5 hours and one was 4 hours and then back and was fine.  I do understand that some airlines require a Dr's note after 30 weeks so you may want to check.  Also I had complied the names of hospitals in the area where I was heading with the best NICU's in case of preterm labor so you may want to be prepared there as well.  Have fun!
  • Be sure to keep your feet moving. While you are sitting down roll your ankles and pump your feet like a gas pedal. compression stocking will help too. You do not want to get a DVT but they are rare. Good luck.

My MIL asked me yesterday if I wanted her to take me to the store. I asked her why and she replyed that she did not think I was able to drive anymore. She gave me a horrified look  when I told her that I was and that I was never told that I could not. People are so dumb when they talk or give advice to pregnant women. I wish I had a giant stamp that says moron to plaster it to thier forheads.

  • My doctor said I could fly until I'm 34 weeks, assuming everything continues to go well with my pregnancy.  I have a trip for work planned for the week of 10/26.  I'll be 31w 3d when I leave and 32 weeks exactly when I come back.  I'm not worried about it, but I do plan to bring a note from my doctor just in case.  I've had to fly a lot for work over the past 2 months (including a 4 hour flight) and haven't had any problems.  I just try to get an aisle seat and drink a lot of water.
  • Thank you to everyone who posted their thoughts!!! I really appreciate all of your stories and plans...sometimes I feel as if I'm not doing things "right" Thanks again :)
