anyone else have tonsil stone/tolsillolith?

i dont know if this is a pregnancy related issue, but it's only bothered me during pregnancy and i'm wondering if anyone else has experienced these.

it's kinda gross, but i have this white spot on my tonsil which feels like theres something stuck in my throat and my throat is kinda sore but nothing major. after looking it up i've found that it's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillolith

i had a tonsil stone about two weeks ago and was able to remove it but it seems to have come back in the exact same spot. i brush my teeth at least 3 times a day and use floss and mouthwash but nothing is helping.

anyone else going through this? is it pregnancy related? (i've found no definitive answers online relating it to pregnancy)

  • As gross as it is, I've had these for years. ?Unfortunately, they're not pregnancy related. ?Although, mine have seemed to be less frequent during pregnancy. ?I honestly had no idea what they were called. ?

  • I lived with this problem for years and it is not pregnancy realted.  Mine got so bad that I had a sore throat 24-7 and they were getting infected.  I had to have my tonsils removed at the age of 27 last year--not fun and very painful!  But I ahve felt like a new person since.  From what I was told the stones cause infection and can make you very sick because it is nasty junk just sitting there.  You may want to consider tonsil removal after pregnancy.  I would do it again in a heartbeat!
  • I have had these for years as well... it is gross, and they smell (TMI) but I have gone to the dr and dentist about them and i guess they are calcifications and you get more depending on what you eat. the only solution is voluntarily removing your tonsils... It happens alot to people that have had strep and the scarred tonsils have holes in them. I had strep alot as a child... lucky me!
  • I had these since a teen and I had a tonsillectomy 2 years ago to get rid of em. I had very deep tonsil crypts so it was the only option. Its been a great relief, I dont wake up with the sore throats anymore nor do I have to deal with the gagging, or bad breath that comes with them. I dont know what other alternatives there are. Maybe you should consult with an ENT doctor...
  • I had them years ago and didn't know what they were called.  The only way I got rid of them was to have my tonsils removed.

  • I've been getting these since I was like 17. Mine have increased since pregnancy, but I'm attributing that to my increase in post nasal drip. They're totally gross. Ick!

  • I had all kinds of problems with my tonsils thru adolescences and into college.  I'd suffered thru the stones a few times but the final straw is when my tonsils actually started to hemorrhage after a back to back bout with strep, bronchitis, pneumonia, and back to strep.  I had those suckers removed my freshman year of college and I've never had any problems since.  The bad breath went away as did my chronic sickness.  In fact, my immune system was so pumped up from not having to fight them that I missed the massive flu and cold seasons for the next two years!

I would highly recommend talking to an ENT once you deliver and see what you can do about those things.  It's not pleasant but you're only uncomfy for a few days and then it gets better (and apparently if they use a harmonic scalpel it's even shorter - or so says my friend!)

  • I had these in my pre-pregnancy days.  I use to get lots of little white spots on my tonsils and it was all the little stones - I could literally get tons of them to come out if I pressed on my tonsils at the right spot (sorry TMI)  Yes, they were gross in all ways.

I also got tonsillitis a LOT so I wound up having my tonsils removed back in college.  That solved everything.

  • Thank you so much for posting this...I thought I was the only one.  It is not pregnancy related, but totally annoying!  My dr. told me that they are nothing to worry about (as long as you don't have a killer sore throat with it), but that you should remove them (I use a Q-tip) as they will get bigger.  She also recommended investing in a water pick and squirting a little water/listerine mixture back there which will also prevent them.

  • I've had them for a little while and my ENT told me to not use mouth wash with alcohol.  The alcohol helps them grow by aiding in your tonsils shedding, since it is food and your tonsil skin that the little stones are made of (so gross).  So I use the crest mouthwash with no alcohol and they aren't gone but I do not get them as often.
