Pup just itched the opposite side of her neck from the gash, but theres so much swelling and infection that it ripped right through the skin and now there is a steady stream of blood and goo streaming out. I was going to go to bed until the vet opens but now I'm not sure if I should leave her alone. Should I suck it up for 4 more hours and stay with her? Or do you think she'll be ok if I get some rest?
Re: Am I worrying too much?
This. And if there is no other vet options in your area, I would stay up and make sure she is ok. That sounds pretty bad.
My thoughts exactly! This dog should not be waiting any longer to be seen by a Vet. I'm sure there is an emergency clinic near by that you can take her to. If scratching alone made her open up a new wound that cannot be good.
I hate to get crazy here, but if this were your child, you'd take her to the doctor. Why is this situation any different? Your animals are adorable, btw, and I hope that your pup gets healthy again!
EDIT: I just saw your earlier post about finding a pitbull outside. Is the injured pup the pitbull or is it one of the dogs that you own?
We found her wandering the streets last night. She was attacked by a wild boar and seemed to be doing fine other than the swelling until just now. FVCK!!!
Ok, dilemma #2: The humane society will give her pain meds until their vet sees her, but they also made it clear that they WILL put her down unless we pay their vet fees and adopt her right back. Should I just take her there so she gets some relief while she waits?
ETA: we're trying to do the right thing here, but we really don't have a lot of extra money right now.
UGH. I am so sorry. I had just read your other thread -- too late, I know. This is such a hard situation. Is this something that the ASPCA can help out with? EDIT Or is that the same thing as the humane society? I am a bit clueless.
I wouldn't bring her to somewhere that will put her down. Can you try and find an resuce group to help or a no-kill shelter?
Or call the local news and get the story out. That's what I would do.
Have you cleaned her up a bit yet, like around the wound? Is it still oozing a lot or did it slow after she stopped scratching?
You should definitely stay awake with her, but if she doesn't seem to have any other symptoms other than the awful pussing gash, I think you can wait the few hours for your vet to open up. If she starts acting differently (lathargic especially) then you need to take her somewhere ASAP.
Disclaimer: I am not a vet or a doctor.
