Baby rice at 4 months..

Hello ladies,

I'm getting over a nasty stomach bug and my supply has completely tanked.  I'm so frustrated for DS!!  He has been on the boob every 2 hours (even at night) and is still crying and hungry.  He refuses the bottle though.

I called the pedi, who said to try some rice cereal.  We did, and he ate it.  Miracle.  Dr. said to start with a couple tbs a day, and follow DS's cues.  We did one tbs so far, at lunch.

I feel silly calling him back, but I'm wondering, should I give him the rice before feed/during/after?  I don't want his tummy to get upset by this new food thing... also, should I make up the rice with BM or just water?  Which is easier on their tummy?

TIA :-)

btw, I wasn't planning on starting solids till 6 months as per the WHO.  This really threw us for a loop.  Also, nothing like DH bringing DS to me in the bathroom for a quick feed between pukes!!  Hope never to repeat THAT experience.

  • I use formula, but DD's pedi said to use formula to mix.  Sometimes I will use juice if she starts getting constipated.  You want LO's main source of nutrition to be from the bm, so I'd wait until after the feeding.  I usually wait about an hour.

  • We feed DS solids RIGHT after nursing. That way he gets main nutrition from BM, but then tops off with food and we avoid getting into the "snacking" cycle.
