Preemies

Not sure about current pedi

When we first chose a pedi, we thought we were very happy with our choice.  We were even impressed with him when DS was first born... he visited me and DS within 24 hours of birth and visited several times while DS was in the NICU even though he technically wasn't responsible for DS.  However, now that DS is home and we have had several appts, I'm not sure anymore.

I know that DS wasn't born super early, but he was still a preemie that had issues.  He was in the NICU for 22 days.  He had the typical 34 weeker issues like breathing, feeding, As & Bs, growth issues, etc.  But, I feel lilke the pedi treats him as if he was full term and has never had a problem his entire life.  He's never mentioned anything about RSV, milestones, growth etc... I've only found out about things by doing my own research.  He's always very nice though and we even have his home phone # in case we ever have a question.

I just don't know if we should stay with the current pedi or try to find someone new.  So, I guess my question is... do you feel like a pedi should treat LO differently since they're a preemie?  If so, how do you go about finding a good preemie pedi?

Re: Not sure about current pedi

  • Our pediatrician is somewhat the same way.  There are only a few things she's mentioned related to DD's prematurity.  She looked into RSV shots (DD's not eligible) and advised me and DH to get flu shots.  She's also been really on top of DD's anemia.  We're going to stick with her.

If you're really wanting to switch, I bet you could call the NICU where your LO stayed to see if they could recommend a pediatrician who specializes in preemies.

we went with the pedi my sister was using b/c we needed someone when we got discharged from the hospital and since we were moving out of state didn't really have anyone in mind. he's a nice guy but after our first visit i felt like he didn't really have much experience with preemies, let alone one born so early (24w5d) so i totally changed drs. luckily, we've been going to dartmouth hospital here in NH for nicu follow ups and decided to go with a pediatrician there. i told them our situation and we're scheduled with the new dr next week who has lots of experience with preemies. hopefully it goes well. but if i don't feel comfy with her either i think i will need to keep looking. good luck! you know what's best for your LO

  • I'm not sure!  Our pedi doesn't mention much about preemie-related things, but, I think he just doesn't know a whole lot - but we work with him, and the GI specialist, and the neonatalogist together to get the big picture!

If you're not sure about him though, maybe considering switching!

  • Thanks ladies!  I actually feel a little better knowing that its common that he doesn't mention preemie stuff.  I guess I just assumed that he would mention more about development and milestones especially since DS is not putting weight on as fast as they would like and not meeting milestones.  But, you know what assuming gets you!  The only thing preemie related he ever says is to stay on the preemie formula.

  • You should definitely be comfortable with your doctor.  But ours is similar in that he doesn't talk much about Gwen being born early.  He said we will expect milestones on a more flexible schedule and relates some of her issues to being early, but that's about it.  He definitely didn't seem as concerned about things as they were in the NICU like keeping track of her temps and weights.  I think we just get so used to the babies seeing several doctors a day and being scrutinized.  Good luck with your decision.

I think this it exactly right.  I was so used to everything being a big deal in the NICU that I expected it to be similar.  In the NICU if he didn't gain as much as they wanted it was a huge deal.  Even if he was just an ounce off.  Now, he's gaining even slower and it's like it's no biggie, just continue the high calorie formula and try to push him to eat as much as possible.  I guess the grass is always greener... I was frustrated that the NICU scrutinized DS so much and here I am thinking the pedi isn't scrutinizing enough!
