Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Spinach?

I was feeling adventurous with my steamer tonight while making some batches of baby food so I tossed some frozen spinach in and then pureed it with some squash. After it was done, I remembered that I read something about no spinach until 10 months or something.  Sure enough, wholesomebabyfood.com says to wait until 10mos. Other places say it's fine. So, all-knowing bumpies, wdyt? Does Charlie get the spinach/squash puree or do I toss it?

Re: Spinach?

  • Wow, I didn't know that.  I have been giving Parker spinach since he started solids and other than green poop, there have been no effects.

  • I've definitely given DS foods before the official month mark of when you are supposed to. I haven't tried spinach with him so I don't know of any specific issues, but if I were you and went through the effort of making it, I'd probably try it and just wait a few days to make sure there's no reaction. You could also freeze some and use it in a month or so when you think he might be able to handle it better.

  • I don't think it's an allergen--it probably has more to do with potential GI issues. I'd think. But then again, WTF do I know?
  • wholesomebabyfood.com says it's a nitrate issue. Other places say that after 6mos they can handle the level of nitrates in frozen spinach.
