Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you handle food throwing, hitting, screaming, etc?

the screaming....we ignore it, when we say something about it she does it more

the food throwing....I usually take the tray away or get rid of that food and try something different

the hitting....she just did that for the first time today...3 times. I put her down but it really frusterated me.

How do you handle these things? Is there something else I can do?

  • Do you mean "how do you handle a toddler?" Wink

    Screaming : Ignore

Food throwing : Ends meal time

Hitting : a "time out" and DS is told "hitting hurts, don't hit"

  • Hitting we tell him no and he laughs at me so I am not sure.  Screaming we ignore.

How do I get him to stop pulling my hair!?! That hurts!

  • the screaming - i say "it's not nice to scream" then ignore if it continues

the food throwing - i say, "we don't throw food" and take her out of the high chair.  If she had just started the meal I wait 1 minute, then put her back in and give her her food back (she LOVES food and learned quick about no food throwing).

hitting - we haven't reached that (yet), but imagine it will be similar to the above....one warning then a time out of sorts.

  • Yes, the screaming, I would ignore at this age. I would also do what you do with the food throwing. WHen DS1 started hitting his, I would take his shoulders/arms, and GENTLY plop him down to the ground on his bottom (assuming he wasn't sitting, if she's sitting just do the rest) and say in a very calm voice "we don't hit" and leave it at that.  Get back to what you were doing and try not to make a big deal of it.

  • While we're at it, what do you do about biting? DS bit me on the shoulder tonight, and I screamed because it hurt! My screaming made him cry. I felt bad, but damn it hurt! I was so shocked I didin't know how to handle it.

    This exactly.

  • screaming - I leave the room entirely.  Ignoring alone wasn't working.

Food throwing - food is taken away.  I don't give him anything else.  If he is playing, then he isn't hungry!

Hitting - me?  I tried saying "no, that hurts" which was a complete failure.  Then I learned the powers of pretend crying!

  • hitting:  i grab his hands and guide him to "pet" my face and say gentle.  if he keeps hitting and laughing, i hold his hands together & say no firmly.  i learned that from some girls on here.
