Infant CPR

I had planned for DH and I to become certified in infant CPR before our babies arrive but haven't yet done this. ?I have been previously certified, but it has lapsed. ?My problem now is that each class I can find requires that we go and sit all day, something I am not feeling up to. ?Should I suck it up and do it, or just wait? ?I am feeling like a bad mom already! ?What would you do? ?TIA

Re: Infant CPR

  • My class was only 3 hours and it wasn't too bad.  I did it at around 30 weeks or so.  I think it was definitely worth it and I'm glad we attended!

  • DH and I were both certified and it also had lapsed, all we really needed was a refresher. I was able to find videos on Youtube that are the Red Cross CPR videos and we used that as our refresher. Have you checked your hospital and see if they teach it in a child care class and ask if you can sit in on it? You won't get certified, but it's better than nothing. Sitting all day and getting down on the floor to use the dummies is going to uncomfortable, well at least for me it would have been.

  • Unless you feel really strongly about becoming certified by the Am Heart Assoc or whoever, you can attend short trainings that are usually offered for parents by the hospital (same dept as the childbirth classes). You don't actually become certified or take a test or anything, just practice on some dolls & go over the basic principles for choking, breathing/cpr, etc.
  • Hi! I think it's great that you want to learn CPR and I agree that a full course (even a couple hours long) can be a big commitment. I actually work for the American Heart Association as an event planner and we have these awesome CPR anytime kits. They are a few years old and you can get infant or adult versions for only $30 each. The kits include a 22 minute instructional DVD, a mini-anne doll with inflatable lungs and all. The kit is great and realistic and is intented to teach a family of four. I have a few extra adult/child kits and would be happy to send you one, but I don't have any of the infant ones. You can find them at www.americanheart.org and type "CPR Anytime" into the search box. It's really worth your time and the small fee of $30, I promise! Let me know if you have any questions about it!
