Anyone who was induced- ? from 3rd tri

What factor determined if you would get Cervidil first and THEN pitocin vs. pitocin only? Also how long was the cervidil in for before they started your pitocin? Thanks, when I had DS I only had pitocin. I was contracting regularly, was 2 cm dilated and begining to efface. So far this time my cervix is soft, no effacement and a fingertip dilated and we are scheduling an induction about 37 weeks. So I was just curious.

Re: Anyone who was induced- ? from 3rd tri

  • Induced 2x.  Never had Cervidil.  Only pitocin.  First DD was 41 weeks and I was not progressed at all.  Second I was 1cm dialated and induced both times for GD.

  • are you scheduling an induction for medical reasons at 37 weeks?

I only had pitocin and it didnt help to speed the process. I was 41 weeks.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks.  They only gave me pitocin...maybe b/c I went in at 3cm dialated and I was late???

  • I answered in your 3rd tri post also. A favorable cervix is what is the determining factor for pit or cervidil. If you have an unfavorable cervidil is used, if you have a favorable than pit is used. Cervidil is inserted for 12 hours then removed. If needed pit is given after that.

  • I had 2 doses of Cervadil because I wasn't dilated enough. When that got me to 3cm I started the pitocin.

I thought I would be given Cervidil, but instead was given cytotec.  It's inserted the same way Cervidil is, but they check progress every four hours instead of in twelve hours, and keep re-inserting it up to six times.  I had Cytotec first because I had no dilation whatsoever, and my cervix was still high and hard and closed at almost 42 weeks.  It took three rounds of it (about sixteen hours) because I started contracting on my own with the first dose so they gave me an additional two hours in the hopes that the contracting would continue on its own.  As soon as I got to three cms, they began the pitocin.

  • I can't remember what drug it was but it was the pre-induction that I got two days before Lo was born. they gave me two halves on day and two the next. It did make my water break (my child did not want to come out!!! lol) and I thought thats all it would take but nope....I did get the pitocin and it didn't work...I got the stuff at 6am and didn't have him until 10pm and had a c-sec cause I only opened to 5cm. in 3hrs....then again the epi didn't work either...so I may be an odd case lol

btw I was almost 42weeks preggers.

  • I had cervadil for 18 hours before pit was started.

  • I had to be induced at 34w2d for pre-e so we were starting from scratch (no dilation or effacement).  They inserted Cervidil the night before (10pm?) to soften the cervix and started Pitocin at 6am.
  •  I had cervidil to soften my cervix because when I was checked the day before induction I had no progress (cervix was hard and closed) So I went in later that day at 6:00pm and the cervidil was inserted about 9pm. They like it to be in for 12 hours so it was removed the next day at 9am and and by then I was at a 2 and 80% effaced. Sometimes cervidil actually induces labor from what I hear, but that is not what it is intended to do. Good Luck!
  • I only had pitocin... I was 3 cm dialated and 80% effaced

  • Was given cervidil first for 12 hours. My cervix was closed when they induced me. Had pitocin, but nothing worked. I ended up with a c-section after 36 hours and only 1-2 cm dilated. I was almost 42 weeks pregnant when induced.

This.  I was induced at 41w2d because of high BP that wasn't going any lower.  I was not dilated at all when I went in.

  • I had zero progress so they decided to soften my cervix with cytotec and then start pitocin. Never made it to the pitocin, 2 hours after the cytotec was placed on my cervix my water broke and I started having contractions and progressing on my own.
  • I was dilated 2cm, and 70% effaced. The plan was to have cytotec inserted at 9pm, then pitocin at 6am. Cytotec was inserted at 9:30 pm, my water broke at 10:45pm, so no pitocin was ever given.
  • I was induced at 40wks 5 days with DD#2. I was not dilated, effaced or even softened beforehand. I got Cervadil, rested overnight and woke up 2cm and contracting. No pitocin
  • I wasn't dilated at all when I went in for my induction at 41 w, so I was given Cervidil twice and Cytotec once before becoming dilated at all. Had I been dilated enough at the appt. I had before checking into the hospital, then I woudl have just waited to go int the next day and would have been giving the Pitocin and no Cervidil. Unfortunately, it didn't work that way. I went in on Monday and he was born on Wednesday.
  • I got the foley bulb and pitocin.  The ob did not mention cervidil as an option.
  • I was induced three days before my due date.  I was almost 4 cm when I arrived at the hospital that morning and was 100% effaced, so there was no reason to use Cervidil since, as my OB said, they could have just blown on me to send me into labor.  Had I been overdue and had not been very progressed, I would have had Cervidil put in.
  • I had a three day induction. The first day they used a softner and I was sent home because I was contracting too much for a second round of it. This was in pill form they inserted. Then we went back the next day for a full day on pitocin. There was no real forward progress so I was admitted and the did cervidil through the night. You need to stay if they have you do the cervidil so they can monitor the baby and you. After a night on cerividil they put me back on pitocin for the day. My induction was not successful as I had a c-section. Never made it past 4cm 80%.

I think it will all depend on how you progress. They might start you on pitocin first and then if nothing happens then the cervidil, which is what they did for me.

    Good luck!

  • I had cervadil first because I went into my induction with no dilation or effacement whatsoever. They left the cervadil in for 12 hours overnight (from about 5pm-5am) and it completely effaced me but I didn't dilate. They gave me the option to do another 12 hours of cervadil or start on the Pitocin to see if the contractions would help progress. I opted for the Pitocin, started around 6 or 7am on that and delivered DD at almost 10pm that evening vaginally.
  • I was induced for having a nice case of Bells Palsy, high blood preassure and being 39 weeks along at high altitude. They didn't want my blood preassure to go any higher due to the Bells Palsy. I only had pitocin which lasted several hours and then they stopped it. I was dilated 3 cm.

  • I was already dilated to 4 cm and 90% effaced so no Cervidil and rather than immediately starting pitocin my doc opted to break my waters.   That got labor going pretty quick.   They didn't start me on pitocin til about an hour after my epidural.

(I was induced the day after my due date due to high blood pressure)
