how big of a diaper bag do you need with a baby and a toddler?

Reading girlstylist's post/thread below, I am wondering how big of a diaper bag to get this time around to accomodate a newborn and a toddler?  I do like the jujube 'packabe,' but then I saw the 'be right back' and am wondering if more space would be good?  and then i saw that April ended up wanting a smaller backpack with 2 kids, which got me thinking.  I just remember packing a lot of things when ella was a baby... I suppose a newborn needs more space for clothes and diapers and a toddler needs more food, lol.

  • In our case I rarely pack anything for Grey anymore. If I do need to pack him a snack it is usually pretty compact. I don't even usually pack a cup a for him because he can use regular cups at other peoples houses or at restaurants. At this point i just use my regular purse.

I wish I could remember how i WORE a diaper bag while wearing a baby. I'm also torn on what "style" to get.

  • I don't carry much for Emmy. I have just a regular sized Columbia diaper bag.  I actually am carrying more for Emmy now that I'm potty training and can still fit everything I need for Ethan including a spare set of clothes for Emmy for accidents, and a few pull-ups as a just in case.

  • I downsized with two.  I keep a change of clothes for each in the car, and a diaper and wipes for each in my purse.  If we're out for a very long day, my small diaper bag is still enough for snacks and sippy.

I'm probably not the best example.  My mom carried a 15-pound purse when I was a kid and just thinking about it stresses me out.  She now carries a small purse, but it's so packed that she has to take everything out to find anything.  I need to be able to look in my bag and see exactly what I need, so I go with the bare minimum.  I wish I could get my psyche to respond to clutter in my house the same way... :)

With Max in the sling, I put my PPB across the opposite shoulder, so the weight balances on both sides... I don't remember when I did with him in the Moby... I often left the bag in the car, I think! LOL

  • I had this:

and it wasn't big enough (both kids are still in diapers).

I now have a regular backpack that I bought at Target and it works much better.

  • I found I needed a LOT less than I did the first time around. I overpacked a lot the first time and never used half of what was in my bag. I now keep a change of clothes for both boys in the car as well as extra diapers and wipes. In the beginning, when Jake was a newborn all I really needed for him was a few diapers, wipes, a change of clothes (didn't always have), a burp cloth, and my hooter hider. I also threw in a couple diapers for Ty, some snacks and a sippy. Now, I have formula, water, and a bottle for Jake. Maybe a sippy for Ty, he prefers my camelbak these days, and some snacks. I rarely fill my smaller backpack.

It really is all about personal preference. We were out and about immediately after Jake was born and I found it much easier to get around with a smaller backpack especially as I was almost always wearing Jake.

The one thing that was a must though with two: hands free. Backpack.
