Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Should we start vegetables?

DS has been eating cereal for about a month now, and we've just moved up to eating three times a day, but he only eats 1-2 tbsp at each of those times. Should we go ahead and introduce veggies? Or wait until he's eating more cereal at a sitting? I've read you should move to veggies once they're eating 3-5 tbsp at a time, but didn't know if that actually is what usually happens in the real world. Thanks :)

Re: Should we start vegetables?

  • Did your pedi give you a timeline of when to start?  We had the ok to start cereal and then veggies from 4 months.  Ds ended up hating cereal and refused to eat it so he has had veggies from the very begining of solids.  Since my ds started on veggies I would say it should be ok.

  • DS was not interested in cereal at all so we started veggies shortly after - her was about 5.5 months.
  • Our pedi told us there was no hurry to start him on solids, but if he was seeming like he wasn't satisfied with milk, it was probably time. We've moved pretty slowly with adding add'l cereal feedings.

DS has a doctor's appt. next week, so maybe I'll just wait and ask then.

  • Nope, not what happens in the real world at all.  Our pedi said it doesn't matter the order of the food just as long as you wait 3-5 after a new food to watch for an allergy.  We tried rice cereal, oatmeal cereal then moved on to veggies.  DS still doesn't eat 3tbsp of cereal that is a lot to me.  I only give him 2tbsp with a fruit or veggie.
