Those who have been on a cruise...

any pointers for me?  I've never been, and actually have always been afraid I would get "sea sick" but I had a great opportunity come up, great price, so I'm going.  It will be a girls cruise with SIL, two of our friends and two of their friends.  I plan on getting some dramamine (sp?) just in case.  Any other suggestions?

I'm really getting excited, but this will be the first time away from T that long so a little nervous.  I know I will have a blast, but I will miss her like crazy.

  • How fun! These boards here https://boards.cruisecritic.com/ have TONS of information about cruising. You can find lots of info on the particular ship you will be on too.

I get motion sickness very easily and that was always my biggest fear with going on one, but I do take dramamine and I'm not bothered by it at all.

    So where are you going???

  • Yes Cruise Critic is a great website with tons of info. You can find all kinds of insider tips by reading the message boards.

I was always afraid to drink and take dramamine. Someone suggested I get a Ginger supplement which I found at Sprouts.  I took 2X a day and felt great- I was on the boat 7 days.  You can also try peppermint tea.

    Have fun on your trip!

  • i am horrible on dramamine bc it knocks me out (even the "non drowsy" one). but the last cruise we went on was rough - i mean really rough - and seabands worked 100%.

eta: but the cruise before that was a dream. you couldn't feel the boat at ALL. so it just depends :) maybe you'll be lucky!

  • Oh I guess I should add that I plan on drinking, so yeah, something that works well with alcohol would be fabulous.

that helps ::paranoia:: i was 100000x less sea-sick when i had been drinking.

  • You could give Sea-Bands a try - I used them for my awful morning sickness, but they're really for motion sickness.  DH found them for me at Walgreen's (you may have to ask where they are), in the lovely colors of black and light blue.  Just remember to take them off periodically if you lay out, or you'll have a funky tan line around your wrists like I did.  :)

whatever. i looked freakin cool in my sea-bands. ;) (the boat has gray ones!! haha)

and other tips for the cruise - if you are a big wine drinker, they usually have "packages" you can get (avg about 1-2 bottles a day. don't judge) that is a lot cheaper than by the bottle.

Yeah, I used those when I was pg - the ugly light blue ones.  They were gross, but helped!

OMG, I hated those things, but they saved me from barfing in our apartment complex parking lot in the mornings when I took Honey out.  I think I wore them for three months straight, ugh.  And they looked so lovely with my nice outfits when we were out for dinner in Mexico.  So lovely.  Not that I was eating much anyways!

  • I have been on three cruises (both in the summer and in Jan.) and never even felt the boat rock.  Not once.  Take some seabands though, just in case.

What I love about cruising is you can do as much, or as little as you want.  I'm super jealous you're going with a bunch of girl friends ... how fun is that?!  Drink and eat LOTS!  :)

  • I do the little patches that you stick behind your ear.  You can get them from the Dr and they work like a charm!!  Plus they hardly show!

  • I've never been on a cruise so i am super jealous; we should have a nestie cruise ;o)

Oooh Jess, I like those.  And they're fine with drinking? (possibly heavily) ;)

  • I'm always afraid to try anything else but the dramamine because I know it will work for me. It has to be the full strength though and for whatever reason, I have no problem consuming alcohol with it or getting drowsy.

Then again, maybe it's all the alcohol that really works. Stick out tongue

I'm so jealous of your girls cruise!

  • I got horribly sick on my first cruise and dramamine did not help at all. I went to the pursers desk and they gave me meclazine (sp?) which is actually a prescription drug that my husband had been taking for vertigo. I just get a prescription from the doctor each time we cruise and no problems even with drinking heavily.

I have heard mixed reviews about the seabands and ear patches, some love them some day they don't work at all.

Defiantly check out cruise critic to see what tips others have, but also the roll call for your cruise. Its a great oppurtunity to meet up with people who are sailing with you and Royal Carribean will set up the meet and mingle (or something along that lines) if enough people sign up prior to sailing. Pretty much it means free drinks. And don't forget to go to the Captain's reception on formula night, also free drinks.

  • The patches did great, even with drinking heavily!  :)

When we go on our cruise in Jan we will be getting them again!

  • No advice on the cruise, just wanted to say how jealous I am :) That will be an awesome trip I am sure!

  • my biggest advice - take the dramamine BEFORE you get sick - they make non drowsy kind now. those sea bands are supposed to help too.  depending on what kind of cruise you are going on though, most of those ships are HUGE and you won't really get sea sick unless there is a storm and the water conditions are bad.

pack lots of loose clothing b/c you will be eating LOTS and don't want to be wearing fitted clothes ;) be prepared to eat..and eat...and then eat! :)

bring tons of sunscreen b/c it is $$$ if you run out and have to buy it there

    have fun!!!
