Anyone have alarm systems?

What kind do you have? Just doors? Motion Detectors? Windows too?

Can I ask how much your system costs (set up, monthly fees, false alarm fees, etc)?

Do you like it? Is there something else you wish you would have got?

Thanks!

  • I don't want to advertise over the interwebs!  If you'll email me, I'll tell you about mine.  bec_collins at hotmail.

ETA:  Not advertise as in I sell security systems!  I meant to say I don't want the security info published on the internet.  Ugh, it's been a long morning already...

  • We actually had an attempted break-in yesterday morning.

Yesterday afternoon I was on the phone to ADT. They quoted us $300 install and $30/month for a basic (doors, motion sensor, keypad) system.

I would say ask about any discounts. They offered us a discount based on our USAA insurance -- also asked if we were AARP members, but I'm pretty sure that won't apply to many on this board. :)

  • I have no idea what it costs to install, ours was in the house already.

We have it on our doors and windows.  We had a motion sensor in the living room where it could detect movement in the major parts of the house (living room where the back door is, kitchen, and front door), but it kept on setting our alarm off.  I think it might have been our ceiling fan.  We had it switched out for a sound sensor.  If it senses glass breaking it sets the alarm off.

We pay $27 per month.  We went with a local company that was just starting out.  It was the contractor for our builder.  I believe we can have 2 false alarms at no charge (a false alarm meaning the police have to come and check things out).  I don't know the time frame on them.  I don't think there is a limit on the false alarms when they call us after the alarm has gone off and we give them the password saying all is okay.

Our neighbors went with ADT and they have an alarm on their garage door.  They also have a remote on their keychain to set their alarm.  Both would have been nice to have.

  • We have Brinks.  I'm sure prices vary a ton so take this with a grain of salt.  Set up was a couple hundred dollars if I remember right.  We pay $30-something a month for monitoring.  We don't have motion detectors because we have 4 cats so we just have doors and glass break sensors on the lower level.

You should get a discount on your homeowners insurance for having an alarm so make sure to tell them.

I do like the peace of mind but it's not cheap so we're debating whether to keep it or cancel...
