3rd Trimester

to tear or not to tear...

after learning a little more about it in my bradley class, ive decided that possibly tearing is the better option. if they cut, you'll always need stitches (upwards of 35 according to my childbirth teacher) and it always cuts into the muscle (OUCH!!).

i've decided that if i tear, i tear and if not, then hooray!! most tears require minimal stitches anyway.

Re: to tear or not to tear...

  • I tore and it wasnt bad at all. Motrin, ibuprofen, tucks, solarcaine and i was good :)

  • I'd rather have a natural tear than an episiotomy.

  • Tearing is better and safer. You could have a 1 or 2 degree natural tear as opposed to a 3rd or 4th degree episiotomy cut. There are definitely ways to help prevent or reduce tearing, such as giving birth in a squatting/sitting/standing position or even on your hands and knees. Not to mention that if you push when you feel ready to push, instead of on-demand, it gives your perineum time to stretch and helps prevent tearing as well.

in a nutshell, this is what i mean :) haha

  • The only reason I would choose to be cut it because you can chose where you "tear". Tearing upwards is really bad and hard to fix. Tearing down is not as bad.

  • yeah thats what I'm thinking (I'm also taken Bradley classes), plus we've watched a few births on tape now and i have hope from those ladies that didn't!
  • most doctors don't even do episiotomy's anymore anyway. tearing is much more natural and more healthy than being cut

  • the thought of tearing AND of an episiotomy makes me cringe! cringe big time. i like to be ignorant

::runs out of post with eyes closed and hands over ears::

  • I'd like to be ignorant and think my skin will stretch like elastic, but I do realize that it won't. I really do not want and episiotomy at all. Does anyone know what kind of stitches they give you? Are they the kind that dissolve on their own or do they need to be removed after the area has healed? (I assume it's the dissolve, but have zero experience and no basis to make a guess).
  • yup! I agree. My Dr. When i had my son was a idjit. She decided I needed to have an episiotomy and I had no choice, literally, she as cutting me before I could say no. That is one of the many things I disliked about my birth ex. with my son. I severely dislike that dr. and would never recommend her to anyone! I did heal quickly though. 2 weeks and no more pain.

They use the kind that dissolve. And with a tear your recovery time is less severe! I never had a Sitz bath with the little tear I got with each delivery. Women that I know who've gotten episiotomies could barely sit and had to sit on doughnut pillows, took them a lot longer to recovery, etc.

The only thing you can't do after a tear is wipe with TP. They give you a Peri-Wash bottle. You fill it with warm water and squirt it after you're done peeing (as weird as this sounds, it actually feels good). Then you blot with TP. It's really not that bad at all!

  • So, we learned at our last class that our doctor cuts approximently 80% of women, so they don't tear.  I am not okay with this at all and am definetly going to talk to him about it before the big day.  I couldn't believe this, I even asked for clarification in class in case I heard wrong!  They said that a cut is easier to heal than a tear.

Either way makes me cringe, just wondering what your docs said about it.

  • i had a really "messy" tear with my first (as in, hard for them to stitch back up) and i would still have preferred it over an episiotomy.
