Do you know someone who had complications w/ a VBAC?

My doc won't allow me to attempt a VBAC because I have already had 2 c-sections...she says the risk of a ruptured uterus is too great.  A ruptured uterus sounds horrible and I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone who has had this or another complication with a VBAC?

My neighbor said she had an emergency c/s with #1 and had a planned c/s with #2 and the morning of her scheduled c/s, she went into labor.  During her c/s her uterus burst and the doc said, because she was in surgery already, it saved her baby's life and probably hers as well.  They told her that baby would have slipped out of her uterus and into her abdomen, possibly killing them both. She said her recovery was much worse then her 1st c/s because of that complication.  Just wondering if this is why they usually schedule c-sections a week or two before due dates??

Anyone else know of a similar story or experience?  I'd like to get an idea of how much of a risk a VBAC is?

  • My SIL wanted to have a VBAC, but her dr. wouldn't allow it because of other complications too.  I know my hospital doesn't do VBAC's b/c of those complications, but I don't have any other personal stories.  GL with making your decision.

Click on BLOG (top of page) after you read the main page. There is also a link at the top of the page for VBAC.

Best bet may be to find a doctor or midwife who does specialize in VBAC.

  • Do you know what kind of incision you have? If you have a low transverse incision (which you almost certainly do unless you had twins, a micropreemie, or some other abnormal circumstance), and you wait for the spontaneous onset of labor (no inductions), then the rate of uterine rupture is somewhere below 1%. Your chances for a successful VBAC are somewhere around 70% depending on the reason for your first c/s.

My original OB was not on board with a VBAC either. He admitted to me that the reason was his fear of being sued in the rare event that there was a complication (he had a few other reasons too - mainly his personal belief that c/s are easier to recover from than vaginal births).

eta: I somehow missed that you've had two c/s before I wrote this out. That would change the stats somewhat, I'm not sure how much. Have you had any successful vaginal births? I believe that ACOG recommends that you be allowed a trial of labor if you have a "proven pelvis," but not if you have had only c-sections.

I had a VBAC, although I did not have any complications.  Uterine rupture after 1 low-transverse c-section are rare, a  less than 1% risk.  I don't know the satistics of uterine rupture after 2 c-sections.  Check out the website though, it has a lot of great information.

  • I am attempting a VBAC with this child, but I have only had one c-section.  My midwife would not allow it if I had two, but the risk of a uterine rupture is below 1% for me and the risks of a c-section are actually about the same.  I know someone who had a successful VBAC after 2 c-sections but you'd need to find an experienced doctor who supports it.  Do lots of research online!

  • I am a L&D RN and I have seen these complications first hand. They are very scary when they happen. They are rare and if you are being monitored very closely during labor, they an usually be picked up before it gets to the point of a ruptured uterus.

Even though I have seen these complications, I am going to try for a VBAC if (and only if) I go into labor on my own and things go smooth. My c/s was because DS was breech. If I don't go into labor, then I will have a scheduled c/s.

I have never known of a Dr. in my 9 years as a L&D RN to allow a person to VBAC after they have had 2 previous c/s.  That would be too risky IMO. :)

  • Figured I would throw this link up here too.  I just came across it.  Basically they are saying that the risk of uterine rupture after 2 c-sections is estimated at about 1.7%.  There really hasn't been much research on it as majority of Doctors will not allow a VBA2C.
