Breastfeeding

Fussing/Pulling off breast

Just a question for you ladies...

The past few days DS has been breaking his latch and fussing at the breast - he'll make sucking motions with his mouth but will only suck 3 or 4 times before pulling off and crying.

I thought this might be because of low supply, but right after I nursed him on both sides yesterday I pumped and got almost 3 ounces.

He had his shots last Thursday but other than that, I can't think of anything that has changed. Any ideas?

Oh yeah.... and sometimes I have to wait for it... but once she burps, she goes right back to the breast.

  • I was just about to post this myself! My LO has gotten really squirmy at the breast and I'm not sure why? Not sure if he's not getting milk fast enough or what. It's really annoying. Eventually he puts himself to sleep at the breast, I take him off and he wakes up 5 min. later crying and rooting like he wants more. I'm confused!

I could have written this myself!

Sometimes when DD does this, I'll take her off and try to self-express to check how the milk flow is.  9 times out of 10, there is hardly anything coming out, so I'll switch her to the other breast.   The other 1 time out of 10 is I think due to a needed burp of if she is has gas.  At least, I think that's what it is.  I still don't really know! Sad

  • DS used to do the same thing and it was due to my let down being too forceful, it was coming out too fast and he was getting frustrated, so he would unlatch, fuss, then try to latch again.  He eventually grew out of it as he got bigger and could handle more milk.  When your DS breaks his latch do you still have milk coming out?  If so that could be the cause.
  • my 5 day old is doing this after 3 great days and i am so disappointed. we see the ped and lact cons 2moro but if anyone has any advice please let me know.  she was doing great, but once my milk came in she just shakes her head and screams at the breast.  i have been pumping and feeding to be sure she eats :(
  • my LO does this too and with her I found that it either means a gas bubble and she needs burped or a wet/dirty diaper.  As soon as she burps or is changed, she is good to go.
