Tested positive for strep B in urine??

Okay, girls, my nurse called and said my urine sample tested positive for strep B. She said it was no big deal at all. I will be taking ampicillin (antibiotic) 3x per day for 7 days right now. She said it's sort of like I have a UTI - I have no symptoms of one though. Then, before I'm in labor, they will need to give me an antibiotic to make sure I don't pass it onto our baby. I asked if we needed to schedule an induction, but she said no. I just will need to notify the hospital when we get there.

Of course, I called my RE nurse to confirm, and she said it really isn't a big deal.

So, who tested positive? Is it really not a big deal? I'm going to have everything written down when we head to the hospital to make sure that we don't forget to tell them about it, but I just needed a little reassurance that others have had healthy babies with this, right?!

Re: Tested positive for strep B in urine??

  • For my first pregnancy, I didn't have this issue.  Unfortunately, I did test positive the second time around.

During labor, I got an IV with antibiotics so I didn't pass the GBS to my son.  For the record, I arrived at the hospital at 9 p.m. and my son was born at 11:25 p.m.  I didn't have the IV in for all that long and he's healthy and beautiful!  Don't worry, it's not a big deal if your doctor knows about it beforehand.

  • my SIL had with both of her LOs and they are perfectly healthy!
  • You're just a little more "on the clock" when it comes to labor - they want to give you the antibiotic doses at certain times, so they don't want you hanging out at home forever.  But other than that, I think it is NBD.

  • I tested positive as well. I was told the same thing and that it really is no big deal. You just need to be on antibiotics for delivery.

  • I'm group B strep positive too, it was discovered with my pap that they do at your first OB visit at my clinic.  They told me the same thing, it's totally not a big deal, 90% of women have it and the only thing that changes is the antibiotics when discovered and notifying the hospital should I spontaneously go into labor so they can give me antibiotics at labor too.
