GD and insurance

I met with the dietician on Friday and got my meter and starter kit but then went ahead and went to the pharmacy with my perscription for the supplies for when the starter kit runs out......the test strips alone were $120...insurance didnt cover any of it!!  Anyone else have this problem????

Re: GD and insurance

  • Even with insurance, my strips are $100 and my lancets are $20.

  • That's just crazy.......well I guess I shouldnt complain but I just thought it was crazy the cost of the strips.  The lancets were like $15...so i can deal with that but the strips were crazy expensive and it will only last me 25 days if i'm lucky.  I had to use 3 on one test today because I didnt have enough blood and got an error on the first two tries!
  • You could ask the dietician if she has any more samples to give you?
  • ewww.. that sucks!  mine were free.  Pretty much everything GD except for the Co-pay for nutritionist was free.

try not to overuse them like me.  I pretty much use them when ever i feel like it b/c i know it's covered

This is my problem too!  I'm covered 100% so I use them to see what my numbers are at random times (ie: middle of the night to make sure I'm not spiking).

It sucks for you that they're not covered.  I can't believe that!

  • My strips and lancets are $15 and the meter was free.  Although, my insurance doesn't cover the dietitian so I only went once.  I believe my doctor knows more anyways.

  • My advice is to call your insurance company and see if they cover another brand.

I had the same problem when my insurance changed - I called the insurance company and I was advised that they don?t cover that meter brand but they cover another meter and I asked my doctors to write a script for that one. It saved me a lot.

I agree.  The nurse gave me an accucheck meter and starter kit.  I went to fill the prescription at the pharmacy and they said my insurance didn't cover that brand.  The nurse had to call in a script for the Freestyle meter, strips and lancets...all of which my insurance covered.

GRRR....I already bought the stuff for the accucheck meter so I dont want to have to get a new meter and supplies after I already purchased the strips, etc for it.  Just annoying that this stuff cant be figured out ahead of time!!  I figure I'll try to use only 1 strip per test but like today it took me 3 strips for after breakfast and 3 after lunch......so annoying!!

  • My doctor did not specify brand when she wrote the prescription for the meter and strips.  When I went to fill it, they gave me a price list and I choose the less expensive alternative.

Mine too, although I have had mine for a while already since I am a type 2 diabetic. ?I wound up choosing based on what was covered and the recommendation of the pharmacist. ?Thankfully, everything is covered (except for my copay.)?

  • You may also have to go to a medical supply store to get your supplies.  I tried to get mine at the regular pharmacy and my insurance won't cover them there, only at the medical supply store.
