Caesarian Rate

I was just reading something about a hospital that no longer allows VBAC, and there was a statistic that said that 31% of deliveries are c-sections. Holy cow, that is a lot and I had no idea!

Re: Caesarian Rate

  • Yeah - c/s rates are astronomically high.  :(  *praying for a VBAC!*

  • Yep.  There are rumors that my doc back home had an even higher rate!  As a natural birth mama to be I was terrified of him trying to get me to do one.

  • Yeah, on our hospital tour they told us that their c-section rate was "in line with the national average" which I think is like 25%... and 95% of moms get epidurals!  Eek!  I really wish I could afford to hire a midwife or doula or give birth at a free-standing birthing center... or even head to a hospital across the river that has some better options like a tub and such.  But I work at this hospital and our stay will be totally free so DH nixed the other options. Huh?
  • It's shocking, isn't it?

  • Gracious! Man, I was not happy with the way I was induced (here's a hint: if you want my blood pressure to go down, DON'T send me to the hospital and keep changing what you're going to do with me while I'm there...when I freak out my BP goes up, not down!), and I can see where it might easily have led to D being in distress and then an emergency c/s.

It's harder and harder for me to trust doctors, yeesh.

Just stay positive about having a natural birth in the hospital.  That will make a world of difference.  That and camp out at home until you just can't stand it anymore.  Then it won't really matter since you'd be so close to the end (hopefully) by the time you went in.

We wanted to do a homebirth with DD but it would have been $3000 out of pocket as opposed to $100 for all my maternity care and hospital stay.  It just wasn't possible and it still makes me sad, especially because it's not possible this time either.  We're moving at 30 weeks Crying

Yeah, I had one. My mom was able to do pitocin and no epidural but hoo boy, not me. And although I was open to several options, including the epi, when I told the nurses that I wanted to wait and see and try other pain management options first they were like, "haha we'll see"

I told my husband that if I go into labor at work that I'm coming home, taking a shower, and taking my time with the process.  He thinks if I do that I'll wait too long and he'll wind up delievering DS on the side of the road sitcom style! lol! "Why can't you just walk right down to L&D?!"

  • The Cesarean rate in the DC area is closer to 50 percent ... !

^^Ditto this.  I'm really hoping that with the doula as well that she can help me get through laboring at home until I'm ready to go to the hospital and not want and epidural as well.  I really don't want another c/s.

  • The hospital I delivered at does allow VBACs and their c-section rate is over 30%.  I was so thankful that I didn't have one even though my labor got really medical at one point (had to have an ekg).

You could ask around - we have a friend who is a "doula in training" so she attends births for free.  Maybe contact some local MWs and doulas and see if there is anyone like this near you?

or, find a friend to act as your doula - sounds a bit weird, but that's what I did.  It wasn't perfect and I'm sure that if she'd had all of the training, it would have been better, but I felt really comfortable with her, she knew my wishes and she wasn't grossed out by what was going on (as opposed to DH ...)
